SUBJECT
The software programmed into the Electronic Brake Control (EBC) module on about 296,000 of the above vehicles may allow a momentary delay in braking when coasting up a hill during certain conditions. This could increase the vehicle's stopping distance and cause a crash without warning.
REPAIR
The EBC module must be reprogrammed (flashed).
PARTS INFORMATION
No parts are required to perform this service procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
A. Reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module using StarSCAN
- Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts.
- Use the following procedure to determine the EBC Module software part number:
- Connect the StarSCAN to the vehicle data link connector and turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position.
- Power ON the StarSCAN.
- From the StarSCAN "Home" screen, select "ECU View" .
- From the StarSCAN "ECU View" screen, select "ABS Antilock Brakes" from the list of modules.
- Select "More Options" .
- Select "ECU Flash" .
- Record the old EBC module "Part Number" displayed at the end of the "Resident flash file for" statement near the top of "Flash ABS" screen for later reference.
- Connect the CH9410 ethernet cable to the StarSCAN and the dealer's network drop.
- Select "Browse for New File" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the newly downloaded flash file "Part Number" in the StarSCAN is:
- the same as the number recorded in Step g, then the EBC module is up to date. No further action is required. Turn off and disconnect the battery charger. Then disconnect the StarSCAN from the vehicle.
- different than the number recorded in Step g, the EBC module requires updating. Continue with Step 6 of this procedure.
- Highlight the calibration and then select "Download to Scantool" .
- Select "Close" after the download is complete, disconnect the ethernet cable from the scan tool and then select "Back" .
- Highlight the listed calibration.
- Select "Update Controller" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- When the EBC module update is complete, select "OK" .
- Verify the part number (resident flash file) at the top of the screen has updated to the new part number.
- Press the "BACK" button four times to return to the "Home" screen.
- Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position and wait 10 seconds.
- Turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position (engine not running).
- After completing the EBC control module reprogramming, clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) using the following procedure:
- Select "System View".
- Select "All DTC's" .
- Select "Clear All Stored DTC's" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Select "YES" in the pop-up box.
- Start the engine and verify that there are no DTC's.
- Disconnect and remove the StarSCAN and battery charger from the vehicle.
B. Reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module using StarMOBILE
- Open the hood and install a battery charger. Verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts.
- Use the following procedure to determine the EBC Module software part number:
- Connect the StarMOBILE to the vehicle data link connector and turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position.
- Connect the CH9410 ethernet cable to the StarMOBILE and the dealer's network drop.
- Power ON the StarMOBILE.
- From the desktop, launch the "StarMOBILE Desktop Client" software.
- Select "NEXT" twice.
- From the on-screen list, choose the StarMOBILE that is being used and then press "NEXT" once and then press the "FINISH" button.
- From the StarMOBILE "Home" Screen, select "ECU View" .
- From the StarMOBILE "ECU View" Screen, select "ABS Antilock Brakes" from the on-screen list of modules.
- Select "More Options".
- Select "ECU Flash" .
- Record the old EBC module "Part Number" displayed at the end of the "Resident flash file for" statement near the top of "Flash ABS" screen for later reference.
- Select "Browse for New File" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the newly downloaded flash file "Part Number" in the StarSCAN is:
- the same as the number recorded in Step k, then the EBC module is up to date. No further action is required. Turn off and disconnect the battery charger. Then disconnect the StarMOBILE from the vehicle.
- different than the number recorded in Step k, the EBC module requires updating. Continue with Step 5 of this procedure.
- Highlight the calibration and then select "Download to Client" .
- Select "Close" after the download is complete and record the newly downloaded file part number.
- Select "Manage Files" .
- Highlight the calibration recorded in Step 6.
- Select "Copy to SM Devise" and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Close the StarMOBILE desktop application after the download to the scan tool is complete.
- Disconnect the ethernet cable from the StarMOBILE scan tool.
- From the "System Status" screen on the StarMOBILE, press the "Exit" button.
- From the "Main Menu" highlight "Enter Standalone Diagnostic Mode" and press the "Select" button.
- Highlight "ECU View" and press the "Select" button.
- Highlight "ABS" and press the "Select" button.
- Select "Flash ECU" and press the "Select" button.
- Push the "Select" button to start the reprogramming process and follow the on-screen screen instructions.
- When the flash is complete, press the "OK" button.
- Verify the part number (resident flash file) at the top of the screen has updated to the new part number.
- Clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) using the following procedure:
- Return to the "HOME" screen (press the "BACK" button three times).
- Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position and wait 10 seconds.
- Turn the ignition key to the "RUN" position (engine not running).
- From the "Home" screen highlight "All DTC's" and press the "Select" button.
- Highlight the "Clear All Stored," press the "Select" button, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Start the vehicle and check for DTC's.
- Disconnect the StarMOBILE scan tool and battery charger from the vehicle.
COMPLETION REPORTING AND REIMBURSEMENT
Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the DealerCONNECT Claim Entry Screen located on the Service tab. Claims submitted will be used by DaimlerChrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.

DEALER NOTIFICATION
All dealers will receive three copies of this dealer recall notification letter by mail. To view this notification on DealerCONNECT, select "Global Recall System" on the Service tab, then click on the description of this notification.
OWNER NOTIFICATION AND SERVICE SCHEDULING
All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for this service with their dealers. A generic copy of the owner letter is attached.
Enclosed with each owner letter is an Owner Notification postcard to allow owners to update our records if applicable.
Dealers are encouraged to consider alternative scheduling and servicing approaches for this recall. This repair does not require hoists or other full service facility special equipment and is a Chrysler Mobile Service approved repair.
VEHICLE LISTS, GLOBAL RECALL SYSTEM, VIP AND DEALER FOLLOW UP
All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall System (GRS) and Vehicle Information Plus (VIP) for dealer inquiry as needed.
GRS provides involved dealers with an updated VIN list of their incomplete vehicles. The owner's name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim submission.
To use this system, click on the "Service" tab and then click on "Global Recall System." Your dealer's VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip code, or VIN sequence.
Dealers must perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule appointments for this repair.
Recall VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information is permitted for this recall only and is strictly prohibited from all other use.

SAFETY RECALL G40 - REPROGRAM ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Chrysler LLC has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in some 2006 and 2007 model year Jeep® Grand Cherokee and Commander vehicles and 2007 model year Jeep® Wrangler and Dodge Nitro vehicles.
The problem is... The software programmed into the Electronic Brake Control (EBC) module on your vehicle (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) may allow a momentary delay in braking when coasting up a hill during certain conditions. This could increase the vehicle's stopping distance and cause a crash without warning.
What your dealer will do... Chrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your dealer will reprogram the EBC module. The work will take about 1/2 hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.
What you must do to ensure your safety... Simply contact your dealer right away to schedule a service appointment. Remember to bring this letter with you to your dealer .
