Theory Of Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Security Gateway Module (SGW) provides security against certain types of attacks and threats from the scan tool and entertainment Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus to the rest of vehicle's CAN Bus Modules. The SGW lies electrically between the vehicle modules on one side, Data Link Connector (DLC) and entertainment system modules on the other side. The main function of the SGW is to gate messages from one CAN Bus system to another and is a dominant module on several CANs. The SGW monitors the Fused B+, CAN Bus circuits, software and hardware for any concerns. The SGW does NOT monitor the FD CAN6 (+) or FD CAN6 (-) circuits for concerns. Successful communication with the vehicle is established thru the FD CAN6 (+) and FD CAN6 (-) circuits with the Diagnostic Scan Tool from the SGW to the Data Link Connector (DLC).

For additional information regarding the description and operation of the vehicle communication. Refer to COMMUNICATION, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

For additional information regarding the description and operation of the SGW refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION . Refer to MODULE, SECURITY GATEWAY (SGW), DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .
