Module, Steering Column Control (SCCM): Removal
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.
Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and be certain that the entire steering system is locked or inhibited from rotation.
- Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before continuing service.
- Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL .
- Move the steering column to the fully lowered position and leave the tilt release lever in the released (down) position.
- Remove the shrouds from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connectors from the back of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).
- Remove the fasteners (3) from the band clamp (2) that secures the collar of the SCCM unit to the steering column (5). The fasteners head is accessed from the underside of the steering column.
- Firmly grasp both sides of the SCCM and pull it sharply upward to unsnap the latch feature of the collar from the retention tab (4) at about the 1 o'clock position on the top of the steering column housing.
- Remove the SCCM from the vehicle as a unit.
