Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR RELATED DTCS
- With the scan tool, read Memory Seat Module-Driver (MSMD) DTCs.
Are there any seat position sensor DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate MSMD DTC diagnostic procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX .
No
- Go To 2
- With the scan tool, read Memory Seat Module-Driver (MSMD) DTCs.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read Memory Seat Module-Driver (MSMD) DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the DTC Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase MSMD DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Move the Seat Switch in the front vertical position multiple times.
- With the scan tool, read MSMD DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE (G404) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL POSITION SENSE CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the (G404) Driver Seat Front Vertical Position Sense circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.NOTE:
The voltage should be above 11.0 volts
Is the voltage above 11.0 volts?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Go To 11
- CHECK THE (P989) SENSOR/SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- Measure the voltage between the (G404) Driver Seat Front Vertical Position Sense circuit and the (P989) Sensor/Switch Return circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.NOTE:
The voltage should be above 11.0 volts
Is the voltage above 11.0 volts?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Go To 12
- Measure the voltage between the (G404) Driver Seat Front Vertical Position Sense circuit and the (P989) Sensor/Switch Return circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL SWITCH IN THE UP POSITION
- Connect a 12-volt test light between ground and the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- While observing the test light, move the Driver Seat Front Vertical Switch in the up position.NOTE:
The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Go To 15
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE WITH THE DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL SWITCH IN THE DOWN POSITION
- Connect a 12-volt test light between ground and the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- While observing the test light, move the Driver Seat Front Vertical Switch in the down position.NOTE:
The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Go To 9
No
- Go To 17
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER
- Connect a 12-volt test light between the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit and the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- While observing the test light, move the Driver Seat Front Vertical Switch in the up position.NOTE:
The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Go To 10
No
- Go To 19
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER
- Connect a 12-volt test light between the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit and the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit at the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector.
- While observing the test light, move the Driver Seat Front Vertical Switch in the down position.NOTE:
The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Replace the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MOTOR, SEAT, FORE AFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 19
- CHECK THE (G404) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL POSITION SENSE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C3 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (G404) Driver Seat Front Vertical Position Sense circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C3 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 19
No
- Repair the (G404) Driver Seat Front Vertical Position Sense circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (P989) SENSOR/SWITCH RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C3 harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (P989) Sensor/Switch Return circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C3 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 19
No
- Repair the (P989) Sensor/Switch Return circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit at the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 19
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage of the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit at the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 19
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit at the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 16
- CHECK THE (P119) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL UP DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 19
No
- Repair the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (P119) Driver Seat Front Vertical Up Driver circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit at the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 18
- CHECK THE (P121) DRIVER SEAT FRONT VERTICAL DOWN DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 19
No
- Repair the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (P121) Driver Seat Front Vertical Down Driver circuit between the Driver Front Vertical Seat Adjuster Motor harness connector and the MSMD C2 harness connector.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect all MSMD harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all MSMD harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read MSMD DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Replace and program the Memory Seat Module-Driver (MSMD) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, MEMORY SEAT (MSM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repairing the wiring harness or connections corrected the problem.
- Perform the POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWER SEAT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
