Diagnostic Test-Testing A Fuel Injector Using A DVOM

  1. Test methods for checking the Battery supply to the Fuel Injector:
    1. (Recommended method) The voltage supply to the Fuel Injector can be checked by load testing the circuit using the recommended circuit load test tool or equivalent. Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES .
    2. Probe the battery supply circuit using 12-volt test light connected to ground.
    3. Back probe and monitor the voltage on the supply circuit at the Fuel Injector. The meter should read constant battery voltage when the Fuel Injector is being commanded on and off. If there is resistance in the circuit the voltage will drop when the Fuel Injector is energized.
  2. Test methods for checking the Fuel Injector Control circuit:
    1. The control circuit should be isolated and checked for an open and a short to ground. The circuit can be checked using an Ohmmeter to check continuity in the circuit and checking for continuity to ground.
    2. The circuit can be isolated and checked for resistance or short to ground using the recommended load test tool. Refer to CHECK A CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND or CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF A CIRCUIT USING AN OHMMETER .
  3. Test method for checking the Fuel Injector:
    1. The Fuel Injector coil resistance can be measured and compared to the other Fuel Injectors if the technical data is not available. The resistance value should be within 10% of the other Fuel Injector coil resistance values. This only checks the Fuel Injector electrically. It does not verify that the injector is operating mechanically. That can only be checked with the lab scope.
  4. Test method for checking the PCM driver:
    1. If there is an actuator function for the driver circuit on the scan tool, back probe and measure the voltage on the control circuit at the Fuel Injector while actuating the driver circuit. There should be Battery voltage present when the driver is off and no voltage on the control circuit when the driver is on. This should be checked after the rest Battery supply and control circuits both check good. If the circuits tested good, and the voltage is not cycling on and off with the driver actuation, the PCM is most likely faulty.
