Electronic Steering Lock ESL Programming Procedure

CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 

NOTE:

When replacing an ESL Module, the ESL Module must be programmed.

NOTE:

Failure to properly program the ESL Module may result in the illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and setting DTC(s).

NOTE:

While performing the ESL Module programming procedure, the vehicle battery must be maintained between 10 and 16 volts. Ambient temperature must be between 0° C (32° F) 60° C (140° F). Vehicle must be in Park with brake pedal depressed.

  1. Turn the Ignition ON, Engine not running.
  2. With the scan tool, verify the ESL Module is communicating on the CAN BUS and it is not programmed.
    NOTE:

    If the Scan Tool indicates that the ESL Module is already programmed, replace the ESL Module.

    NOTE:

    If the Scan Tool can not communicate with the ESL Module, check the harness connections. If the harness connections are good, replace the ESL Module.

  3. Following the menu on the scan tool, program the ESL Module.
  4. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
  5. With the scan tool, read ESL Module DTCs.

    Does the scan tool display any DTCs?

    Yes 

    • Perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure(s).
