Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Verification Test

  1. CHECK THE FUSES AND ERASE DTCS 
    1. Connect any disconnected harness connectors.
    2. Replace any blown fuses.
    3. With the Scan Tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Cycle the Ignition Switch from ON to OFF.
    5. Start the Engine.

      Does the Engine start?

      Yes 

      • Go to  2

      No 

      • With the Scan Tool, read DTCs and refer to the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure.
  2. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL WITH THE ENGINE ON 
    1. Attempt to turn the steering wheel.

      Does the steering wheel turn?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • With the Scan Tool, read DTCs and refer to the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure. If no DTCs are present, check for mechanical binding in the steering column and steering linkage. Refer to the appropriate Service Procedure.
  3. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL WITH THE IGNITION OFF 
    1. Turn the Ignition Switch OFF.
    2. Attempt to turn the steering wheel.

      Does the steering wheel turn?

      Yes 

      • With the Scan Tool, read DTCs and refer to the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure. If no DTCs are present, inspect ESL Module locking pin for proper movement. Refer to the appropriate Service Procedure.

      No 

      • Test is complete.
