Repair and Diagnosis: Electrical: Starters: Overhaul: Starter: Disassembly
- Remove nut from "M" terminal.
- Remove field wire from "M" terminal.
NOTE:
If pinion depth shims are found between solenoid and drive end housing, remove them and set aside. See Fig 1
.
- Remove solenoid screws and magnetic switch. See Fig 2
.
- Remove solenoid plunger spring. See Fig 3
.
- Disengage plunger from lever and remove plunger. See Fig 4
.
- Remove bolts from rear cover. See Fig 5
. Separate motor assembly from drive end housing. Also separate motor assembly from planetary gear set, if present.
- Remove lever from drive pinion. See Fig 6
.
- Drive stopper from snap ring using a deep well socket or similar tool.Fig 7
.
- Remove snap ring from its groove in pinion shaft.
- Remove stopper and drive pinion from pinion shaft. See Fig 8
.
- Remove two brush plate screws and rear cover. See Fig 9
.
- Remove armature from field coil housing.
- Remove armature gaskets from the end of the armature.
