Repair and Diagnosis: Electrical: Starters: Overhaul: Starter: Disassembly

Remove nut from "M" terminal.
Remove field wire from "M" terminal.
NOTE: If pinion depth shims are found between solenoid and drive end housing, remove them and set aside. See Fig 1 .
Remove solenoid screws and magnetic switch. See Fig 2 .
Remove solenoid plunger spring. See Fig 3 .
Disengage plunger from lever and remove plunger. See Fig 4 .
Remove bolts from rear cover. See Fig 5 . Separate motor assembly from drive end housing. Also separate motor assembly from planetary gear set, if present.
Remove lever from drive pinion. See Fig 6 .
Drive stopper from snap ring using a deep well socket or similar tool.Fig 7 .
Remove snap ring from its groove in pinion shaft.
Remove stopper and drive pinion from pinion shaft. See Fig 8 .
Remove two brush plate screws and rear cover. See Fig 9 .
Remove armature from field coil housing.
Remove armature gaskets from the end of the armature.
