Component Inspection

Check Idle Switch

  1. Disconnect TPS connector.
  2. Pull the throttle valve slowly a little (from the close position to the open position) and measure resistance between terminals 2 and 4 of the TPS connector.
    1. Specification:
      1. When the throttle valve is closed, idle switch's resistance is 0Ω.
      2. When the throttle valve is open, idle switch's resistance is infinite Ω.
Fig 1: Measuring Resistance Between Terminals 2 And 4 Of TPS Connector

  3. Is Idle switch's resistance near the specified value?

    YES

    1. Go to next step "Check TPS" procedure.

    NO

    1. Fixed location is no good or defective TPS.
    2. Modify fixed location of TPS or replace TPS.
    3. And go to "VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR " procedure.

Check TPS

  1. Disconnect TPS connector and measure resistance between terminals 1 and 4 of the TPS connector.
    1. Specification: Approx. 3.5~6.5 kΩ (with throttle valve fully closed) at 20°C (68°F)
  2. With still TPS connector disconnected, measure resistance between terminals 1 and 3 of the TPS connector.
  3. Operate the throttle valve slowly from the idle position to the full open position and check the resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle.
    1. Specification: Resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle.
Fig 2: Throttle Angle Resistance Graph
      G07702953
  4. Is TPS normal?

    YES

    1. TPS is "OK".
    2. Possibility of defective ECM. Temporarily test with a new ECM and check for proper operation.

If problem is corrected, replace ECM and go to "VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR " procedure.

    NO

    1. Test with a new TPS and check for proper operation. If problem is corrected, replace it.

And go to "VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR " procedure.
