Base Ignition Timing

NOTE: Timing to be checked with vacuum hose connected.
  1. Ensure A/C is off. If distributor has been disturbed for any reason, the ignition timing must be set statically to 6° BTDC. This sequence is to give only an approximation in order that the engine may be started. DO NOT start engine before statically setting ignition timing.
  2. Connect timing light and tachometer to engine. Ensure distributor vacuum advance is disconnected. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature (thermostat open). DO NOT allow engine speed to exceed 3000 RPM. Ensure idle speed is okay. See BASE IDLE SPEED (1990-EARLY 95)  .
  3. Timing to be checked when engine speed is less than 800 RPM using a stroboscopic lamp. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATION  .
  4. If adjustment is necessary, loosen distributor clamp bolt and rotate clockwise to retard or counterclockwise to advance. When required setting has been attained, tighten clamp nut and recheck setting.
