Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Check speedometer operation. If speedometer is operating properly, go to next step. If speedometer is not operating properly, check for open or short in VSS circuit. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Repair as necessary.
  2. Place transmission shift lever in Neutral. Raise and support rear of vehicle. Access ECM behind glove box. Connect Check Harness "A" (SST 09990-01000) to ECM. See TEST PREPARATION under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Disconnect power steering ECU 6-pin Blue connector and cruise control ECU 26-pin Gray connector. Power steering ECU is located on left behind right side of center console. Cruise control ECU is located behind center console.
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Pink wire) at ECM "A" connector while slowly rotating rear wheel by hand. See Figure.
  5. If voltage fluctuates from zero to 5.5 volts, replace ECM and retest. If voltage does not fluctuate, check wiring harness between instrument cluster and ECM. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as necessary.
