  3. Attach an extension hose between the power steering return hose and an empty container.
  4. CAUTION: Do not mix oil types. Any mixture or any unapproved oil could lead to seal deterioration and leaks. A leak could ultimately cause loss of fluid, which could result in loss of power steering assist.
  5. Fill power steering fluid reservoir using Motorcraft MERCON Multipurpose Transmission Fluid (XT-2-QDX) or equivalent fluid.
  6. CAUTION: Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at a time. Damage to starter motor could result.
  7. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop while cranking the engine until the fluid exiting the extension hose is clear. Keep reservoir full while cranking.
  8. Disconnect the extension hose from the power steering return hose. Connect power steering return hose to power steering reservoir.
  9. Refill the power steering reservoir to correct level. Do NOT overfill. Install the ignition coil fuse No. 30.
  10. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel from against the stops for more than 5 seconds. Damage to the power steering pump may occur.
  11. Start the engine. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop.
  12. If power steering system is noisy and accompanied by aerated fluid, purge air from system. See POWER STEERING AIR PURGE  under LUBRICATION.
  13. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may have set in the Powertrain Control Module. Use scan tool to clear code. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
