Pinpoint Test S: The Power Steering Control (PSC) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Mercury Mariner and 2007 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Use the correct probe adapter(s) when taking measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
- S1 CHECK THE PSC MODULE CIRCUIT 838 (LG/VT) FOR VOLTAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PSC Module C1463b
- Measure the voltage between PSC module C1463b-1, circuit 838 (LG/VT), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to S2.
- NO : VERIFY battery junction box (BJB) fuses 25 (50A) and 32 (50A), if OK, REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- S2 CHECK THE PSC MODULE CIRCUIT 601 (LB/PK) FOR VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: PSC Module C1463a
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between PSC module C1463a-1, circuit 601 (LB/PK), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to S3.
- NO : VERIFY the smart junction box (SJB) fuse 34 (5A), if OK, REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- S3 CHECK THE PSC MODULE CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between PSC module C1463b-3, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
- YES : Go to S4.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- S4 CHECK THE HS-CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE PSC MODULE AND THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the PSC module C1463a-14, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side and the DLC C251-6, circuit 1908 (WH), harness side; and between the PSC module C1463a-16, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit 1909 (BK), harness side.
- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to S5.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- S5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PSC MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PSC module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the PSC module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a PSC module. REFER to POWER STEERING article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
