Pinpoint Test A: The Powertrain Control Module (Pcm) Does Not Respond To The Diagnostic Tool

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2006 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. A1 PINPOINT TEST QA VERIFICATION CHECK

    Yes  : GO to A2.

No  : REFER to PINPOINT TEST QA: UNABLE TO ACTIVATE SELF-TEST/NETWORK COMMUNICATION ERROR to diagnose no communication with the PCM.

  2. A2 CHECK THE PCM C175B FOR DAMAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: PCM C175b.
    • Inspect the PCM connector for damage.
    • Is the PCM C175b OK?

    Yes  : GO to A3.

No  : REPAIR the PCM C175b. CONNECT the PCM C175b. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.

  3. A3 CHECK THE HIGH SPEED CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE DLC AND THE PCM FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the PCM C175b-2, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side.

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

    Yes  : GO to A4.

No  : REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT the PCM C175b. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.

  4. A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the PCM module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L or ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 3.0L (4V) . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
