Symptom Chart

Diagnostics in this information assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC METHODS for information about these practices.

SYMPTOM CHART

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • No communication with the ABS module
  • Fuse(s)
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • ABS module
  • The red brake warning indicator is always/never on
  • Low brake fluid level
  • Brake fluid level sensor
  • Parking brake applied
  • Parking brake switch
  • Brake booster vacuum sensor
  • IPC concern
  • ABS concern
  • The yellow ABS warning indicator is always/never on
  • IPC concern
  • ABS concern
  • The stability/traction control indicator "sliding-car icon" is always/never on
  • IPC concern
  • ABS concern
  • ABS false activation, ABS too sensitive, ABS activates on normal stop
  • Front/rear suspension concern
  • RCM mounting
  • Loose wheel speed sensor/excessive air gap
  • Wheel speed sensor magnetic strip (encoder) damaged, rusted or contaminated with foreign material
  • INSPECT the encoder for damage, rust and foreign material. CLEAN, REMOVE foreign material or INSTALL new as necessary. REFER to Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub in FRONT SUSPENSION or REAR SUSPENSION .
  • Parking brake shoes out of adjustment (dragging)
  • CHECK and if necessary, ADJUST the parking brake shoes.
  • The stability/traction control system is inoperative or cannot be disabled
  • Refer to the Diagnostic Routine
