System Operation - Exterior Power With Memory, Power Fold

Memory

NOTE: If the DDM or PDM detects a mirror motor feedback circuit fault, a time-out strategy disables memory operation for 30 seconds. After the 30 second time-out, normal operation resumes.

Memory recall of the exterior mirror settings is achieved by feedback from two potentiometers within each mirror. The DDM and PDM supply a 5 volt reference voltage signal to the right/left (horizontal) and up/down (vertical) potentiometers inside the mirrors. The return signal from the potentiometers is stored in the DDM and PDM for later recall by the DSM.

When a memory recall or save is initiated, the DSM sends the memory command message to the DDM and PDM over the MS-CAN. Based on this message, the DDM and PDM recall the requested memory preset mirror position, or save the current position to the requested preset. If a manual mirror control, seat adjustment, or engine start is attempted during a memory recall request, the memory recall is canceled.

For more information on memory recall, Refer to: Front Seats

When a concern is detected by the DDM or PDM, a DTC is set in that module. Refer to: Rear View Mirrors

Power Fold

NOTE: If the exterior mirrors are power folded and unfolded several times consecutively, a power lockout feature disables the system for approximately 3-10 minutes to prevent damage to the power fold motors. After 3-10 minutes have elapsed, normal power fold operation resumes.
NOTE: The power folding mirrors may require synchronization after the LH, RH or both power folding mirrors are folded or unfolded manually without using power fold, or if a new power folding mirror is installed. Refer to power folding mirror synchronization in this article.
NOTE: The LH and RH power folding mirrors may not fold and/or unfold at the same rate of speed. This is normal operation of the power folding mirrors.

The power fold feature is activated manually by pressing the exterior mirror fold switch (integral to the LH front door window control switch), or automatically (if enabled). When the automatic folding feature is enabled in the IPC message center, the exterior mirrors automatically fold in when the LH front door is opened and closed, the transmission is placed in park, and the vehicle is locked. The mirrors automatically fold out when the vehicle is unlocked and the LH front door is opened and closed. When the power fold/unfold feature is activated, both exterior mirrors fold or unfold and cannot be controlled independently.

When the ignition is on and the exterior mirror fold switch is pressed, the DDM supplies voltage and ground to the LH exterior mirror bidirectional, polarity reversible, folding motor, and sends a mirror command message to the PDM over the MS-CAN. The PDM supplies voltage and ground to the RH exterior mirror bidirectional, polarity reversible, folding motor When the exterior mirror fold switch is pressed again, the DDM sends the mirror command message to the PDM over the MS-CAN. The DDM and PDM reverse the polarity of the voltage supplied to the exterior mirror folding motors and the mirrors unfold to their previous positions.

When the driver turns the automatic folding feature on or off in the IPC message center, the personality data message containing the selection is sent from the IPC, through the GWM, to the DDM. The DDM monitors the ignition status and vehicle lock status messages from the BCM and the gear position message from the PCM. When the transmission is placed in park, the ignition is turned off, the LH front door is opened and closed and the vehicle is locked using the RKE or door switch, the DDM supplies voltage and ground to the LH exterior mirror folding motor, and sends the passenger mirror command message to the PDM over the MS-CAN. The PDM supplies voltage and ground to the RH exterior mirror folding motor. The exterior mirrors remain folded until the vehicle is unlocked and the LH front door is opened and closed. After the door is closed, the DDM reverses the polarity of the voltage and ground supplied to the LH exterior mirror folding motor and sends the passenger mirror command message to the PDM over the MS-CAN. The PDM reverses the polarity of the voltage supplied to the RH exterior mirror folding motor

Each power fold exterior rear view mirror has an internal motor to fold or unfold the mirror that is not replaceable. If a power folding mirror motor is found to be inoperative, the power folding exterior rear view mirror is replaced as an assembly.
