Engine Running Diagnostic Mode

For information on Ford Color Coded Illustrations refer to OEM COLOR CODING

Activation

NOTE: The engine running diagnostic mode is a hybrid powertrain control module strategy which is separate from the normal operating strategy. The specifics described here are applicable only to the power-split hybrid variants. When in this mode, the engine is running and does not turn off, as it does during normal operation. The engine RPM may be increased to the desired speed by accelerator pedal position. The engine is allowed to idle as long as the powertrain and hybrid electric systems operate within the calibrated limits. This mode is helpful whenever the engine must stay running for diagnostics and repairs that require the engine to be idling for extended time. Carry out the following sequence to activate this mode.

Base

  1. NOTE: The engine will run when the vehicle is in SPORT or EXCITE mode.

Turn the ignition to RUN and switch the vehicle to SPORT or EXCITE mode. REFER to the owner guide.

    Police

NOTE: This procedure requires timely action from the user. Read and review all the steps in this procedure before attempting to activate Engine Running Diagnostic Mode. Failure to perform each step within the calibrated time range will abort the mode without notice requiring the user to restart the sequence.
    1. Clear all DTC's
    2. For PHEV be sure the HVB is above 25% charge.
    3. Be sure the 12 volt battery is above 11 volts.
    4. Power down the modules. Switch the ignition OFF and open and close the driver door. Allow 2 minutes for all modules to power down.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. NOTE: Do not press the brake pedal.

Switch the ignition ON. The ignition should be on, the vehicle should not be Ready To Run.

  4. Within 5 seconds - Fully apply the brake pedal and accelerator pedal together for 8-12 seconds.
  5. Within 5 seconds - Release accelerator pedal, while keeping foot on the brake then engage Ignition Start Mode (Ignition ON, Ready To Run)
  6. NOTE: If the green READY indicator does not turn off after 10 seconds and start flashing, switch the ignition to the off position, open and close the driver door, wait 2 minutes and repeat the procedure.

While holding the brake, fully press the accelerator pedal for 8-12 seconds or until the green READY indicator turns off and starts flashing at a slow to moderate cycle. This indicates that the vehicle is in the engine running diagnostic mode.

  7. Release the brake and accelerator pedals. When this sequence is completed successfully, the vehicle enters the engine running diagnostic mode and the engine remains running continuously.
