Transaxle Disassembly

NOTE: Do not use an impact wrench or remove manual shaft nut without holding manual shaft lever as transaxle may become damaged.
  1. Mount transaxle on stand. Remove torque converter. Remove oil pump drive shaft. Remove oil dipstick, oil filler tube and "O" ring. Remove breather hose. Remove manual shaft nut, input/turbine shaft speed sensor, TR switch and bracket. Remove "O" ring from input/turbine shaft. Remove VSS and "O" ring. Disconnect coupler. Remove connector bolt, oil pipe, packing, spring and steel ball.
  2. CAUTION: Using cleaning solvents or a steam cleaner, clean transaxle exterior thoroughly prior to removing oil pan. If old sealant gets into transaxle during installation of oil pan, trouble may occur in transaxle. Remove all old sealant from oil pan and transaxle case, and clean with cleaning fluids.
  3. Remove oil pan and gasket. Inspect any material found on oil pan or magnet to determine condition of transaxle. If large amounts of material are found, replace torque converter. Inspect clutch facing material for drive plate and brake band wear. Inspect bearing, gear and driven plate for wear. Inspect aluminum parts for wear. Remove oil strainer and "O" ring.
  4. CAUTION: Using cleaning solvents or a steam cleaner, clean transaxle exterior thoroughly prior to removing control valve body. If old sealant gets into transaxle during installation of control valve body, trouble may occur in transaxle. Remove all old sealant from control valve body and transaxle case, and clean with cleaning fluids.
  5. Remove valve body cover and gasket. Disconnect solenoid connectors and TFT sensor connector. Remove control valve body with electrical harness. Remove oil pipe at oil pump. Remove oil pump and gasket. Remove clutch assembly turbine shaft snap ring and remove clutch assembly.
  6. Remove small sun gear and one-way clutch No. 1 assembly. See Fig 1 . Secure 2-4 band with wire to prevent stretching and remove 2-4 band. Pull anchor shaft while holding strut and remove strut. Pull piston stem from 2-4 brake band servo. Remove snap ring, band servo and spring.
  7. Remove one-way clutch retaining snap ring, one-way clutch No. 2 and carrier hub assembly. Remove friction plate.

  8. Remove internal gear snap ring and remove internal gear from output shell. Remove "O" ring located on converter housing side of turbine shaft. Pull out turbine shaft with 3-4 clutch assembly. Separate turbine shaft and 3-4 clutch.
  9. Remove bolts from converter housing to transaxle. Tap lightly with a plastic hammer to remove transaxle case. Remove output shell from output gear. Remove manual shaft and manual plate. See Fig 2 . Remove differential assembly. See Fig 3 .
  10. Remove 2-3 accumulator, orifice check valve spring and check valve. Remove bolt in idler gear and output gear bearing housing to access roll pin in idler gear. Drive roll pin out with pin punch. See Fig 3 . Remove baffle plate. Remove other bolts in idler gear and output gear housing.
  11. Tap housing with plastic hammer lightly to remove. Tap out idler gear shaft from converter housing and remove idler gear with output gear. Remove bearing cover assembly. Remove converter housing from holding fixture. Press bearing race out of torque converter housing using step plate.
