Charging System Pinpoint Test 7: Generator Is Noisy

PINPOINT TEST 7 - GENERATOR IS NOISY

PINPOINT TEST 7 GENERATOR IS NOISY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK FOR ACCESSORY DRIVE NOISE AND MOUNTING BRACKETS
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Check the accessory drive belt for damage and correct installation.
  • Check the accessory mounting brackets and generator pulley for looseness or misalignment.
  • Is the accessory drive OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair as necessary. See DRIVE BELT INSPECTION - 2.3L for the 2.3L, or See DRIVE BELT INSPECTION - 3.0L for the 3.0L engine, or See DRIVE BELT INSPECTION - 4.0L for the 4.0L engine for diagnosis and testing of the accessory drive system. Test the system for normal operation.
2 CHECK GENERATOR FOR ELECTRICAL NOISE
  • Disconnect: Generator 0117-01.
  • Key in START position.
  • With the engine running, determine if the generator is still noisy.
  • Is the noise still present? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new generator. See GENERATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.3L or GENERATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L, 4.0L . Test the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK GENERATOR FOR MECHANICAL NOISE
  • Turn all accessories off. With the engine running, use a stethoscope or equivalent listening device to probe the generator for unusual mechanical noise.
  • Is the generator the noise source? 
Yes Install a new generator. See GENERATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.3L or GENERATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L, 4.0L . Test the system for normal operation.
No See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE MECHANICAL  to diagnose the source of engine noise.
