Possible Causes

CAUTION:
  • Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
NO CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) COMMUNICATION PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PIN POINT TEST 5 NO CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) COMMUNICATION
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE DLC D-01 FOR DAMAGE
  • Key OFF.
  • Inspect the DLC D-01 for damage.
  • Is the DLC D-01 OK?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the DLC D-01. CARRY OUT the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
2 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 0922-101 FOR DAMAGE
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Inspect the instrument cluster 0922-101 for damage.
  • Is the instrument cluster 0922-101 connector OK?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair the instrument cluster 0922-101. Connect the instrument cluster 0922-101. Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
3 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS BETWEEN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE DLC FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between the DLC D-01 pin 6, circuit (W/LG), harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 1, circuit (W/LG), harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between the DLC D-01 pin 14, circuit (P/LG), harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 2, circuit (P/LG), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (W/LG) or (P/LG) for an open. Connect the instrument cluster 0922-101. Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
4 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between the D-01 pin 6, circuit (W/LG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC D-01 pin 14, circuit (P/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (W/LG) or (P/LG) for a short to ground. Connect the instrument cluster 0922-101. Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
5 CHECK THE CAN CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON.
  • Measure the voltage between the DLC D-01 pin 6, circuit (W/LG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC D-01 pin 14, circuit (P/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage indicated?
Yes Repair circuit (W/LG) or (P/LG) for a short to voltage. Connect the instrument cluster 0922-101. Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • push-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Repeat the self-test. Carry out the WDS or equivalent tester data link test.
