Automatic Transmission External Controls Pinpoint Test 1: Shift Interlock System Does Not Release / Lock Properly

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS PINPOINT TEST 1 CHART - SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE / LOCK PROPERLY

1 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CONCERNS: CYCLING / SHUDDER / CHATTER
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK FOR CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION (CPP) JUMPER PLUG ON AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EQUIPPED VEHICLES
  • Inspect CPP jumber plug for correct installation.
  • Is the CPP jumper plug correctly installed?
Yes Go to next step.
No Install the CPP jumper plug. Test the system for normal operation.
2 TEST THE BRAKE LIGHTS
  • Apply the brake pedal and view the brake lights.
  • Do the brake lights illuminate?
Yes Go to step 8.
No Go to next step.
3 TEST F2.32 (5A)
  • Key OFF.
  • Check fuse: F2.32 (5A)
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to next step.
4 TEST CIRCUIT (BR) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Disconnect the prake pedal position (BPP) switch.
  • Measure the resistance of circuit (BR) at BPP switch.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (BR) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
5 TEST CIRCUIT (BR) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between the output side of fuse F2.32 (5A) and the brake ON/OFF switch, circuit (BR).
  • Is resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (BR) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
6 TEST THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH
  • Measure the resistance of the brake pedal position (BPP) switch while open (OFF) and closed (ON).
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the BPP switch in the ON position and greater than 10,000 ohms with the BPP switch in the OFF position?
Yes Go to next step.
No INSTALL a new BPP switch. TEST the system for normal operation.
7 TEST CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Disconnect the shift lock actuator.
  • Measure the resistance between the shift lock actuator circuit (R/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (R/LG) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
8 TEST CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance of circuit (R/LG) between shift lock actuator and the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (R/LG) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
9 TEST FOR VOLTAGE ON CIRCUIT (R)
  • Key on, engine off (KOEO)
  • Measure the voltage at shift lock actuator, circuit (R).
  • Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes Go to step 13.
No Go to next step.
10 TEST FUSE F2.20 (10A)
  • Key in start position.
  • Check fuse: F2.20 (10A)
  • Is the resistance of the fuse less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to step 12.
No Go to next step.
11 TEST CIRCUIT (R) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance at shift lock actuator, circuit (R).
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the circuit for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
12 TEST CIRCUIT (R) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance of circuit (R) between the output side of fuse F2.20 (10A) and the shift lock actuator.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (R) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
13 TEST CIRCUIT (B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance of shift lock actuator, circuit (B).
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes INSTALL a new shift lock actuator. TEST the system for normal operation.
No REPAIR circuit (B) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
