Possible Causes

NOTE:
  • 4x4 HIGH / 4X4 LOW is not intended for driving on hard/dry surfaces.
ELECTRONIC SHIFT ON FLY (ESOF) FUNCTIONAL TEST - PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 6 ELECTRONIC SHIFT ON THE FLY (ESOF) FUNCTIONAL TEST
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK FOR 4WD INDICATOR PROVE OUT
  • Do the 4WD indicators illuminate at prove out? 
Yes Go to next step.
No CHECK the instrument cluster for faults. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - INSTRUMENT CLUSTER , .
2 CHECK 2WD OPERATION
  • Stop the vehicle.
  • Transmission in NEUTRAL.
  • Switch the 4WD switch to 2WD.
  • Do the 4WD indicators turn off? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK FOR DTCs
  • Transmission in PARK.
  • Connect the IDS or equivalent tester.
  • Carry out the on-demand self-test.
  • Are DTCs retrieved? 
Yes See DTC INDEX- 4WD , .
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2WD
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 3: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW MODES CORRECTLY , .
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 7: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 4X4 LOW AND 4X4 INDICATORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY/DO NOT OPERATE , .
5 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2WD
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK 4x4 HIGH OPERATION
  • Switch the 4WD switch to 4x4 HIGH.
  • Does the 4x4 HIGH indicator illuminate correctly? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Go to next step.
7 CHECK FOR DTCs
  • Transmission in PARK.
  • Connect the IDS or equivalent tester.
  • Carry out the on-demand self-test.
  • Are DTCs retrieved? 
Yes See DTC INDEX - 4WD , for diagnosis.
No Go to next step.
8 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4x4 HIGH
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 7: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 4X4 LOW AND 4X4 INDICATORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY/DO NOT OPERATE , .
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 2: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 2WD AND 4WD MODES CORRECTLY , .
9 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4x4 HIGH
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
  • Is straightline wind-up present? 
Yes See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 5: STRAIGHTLINE DRIVELINE WIND-UP , .
No Go to next step.
10 CHECK FOR 4x4 HIGH WIND-UP IN TURNS
  • Drive the vehicle in 4x4 HIGH while turning.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes Go to next step.
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 2: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 2WD AND 4WD MODES CORRECTLY , .
11 CHECK 4x4 LOW OPERATION
  • Bring the vehicle to a stop, transaxle in NEUTRAL, switch the 4WD switch to 4x4 LOW.
  • Does the 4x4 LOW indicator illuminate correctly? 
Yes Go to step 14.
No Go to next step.
12 CHECK FOR DTCs
  • Transmission in PARK.
  • Connect the IDS or equivalent tester.
  • Release the brake pedal.
  • Carry out the on-demand self-test.
  • Are DTCs retrieved? 
Yes See DTC INDEX - 4WD , for diagnosis.
No Go to next step.
13 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4x4 LOW
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 7: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 4X4 LOW AND 4X4 INDICATORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY/DO NOT OPERATE , .
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 3: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW MODES CORRECTLY , .
14 CHECK FOR 4x4 LOW WIND-UP IN TURNS
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present and 4x4 LOW functioning? 
Yes Go to next step.
No CHECK for 4WD control module DTC(s). REFER to the Inspection and Verification procedure in this section. IF no DTC(s) are present, See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 3: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW MODES CORRECTLY , .
15 CHECK 4x4 LOW TO 2WD SHIFT
With the vehicle at a stop and transaxle in NEUTRAL, switch the 4WD switch from 4x4 LOW to 2WD.
Do the 4WD indicators turn off? 
Yes Go to step 18.
No Go to next step.
16 CHECK FOR DTCs
  • Transmission in PARK.
  • Release the brake pedal.
  • Connect the IDS or equivalent tester.
  • Carry out the on-demand self-test.

Are DTCs retrieved? 

Yes See DTC INDEX - 4WD , for diagnosis.
No Go to next step.
17 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2WD
  • Switch the 4WD switch to 2WD.
  • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
  • Is wind-up present in turns? 
Yes See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 3: VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW MODES CORRECTLY , .
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 7: THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 4X4 LOW AND 4X4 INDICATORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY/DO NOT OPERATE , .
18 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT
  • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
  • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary.
No Go to next step.
19 CHECK 2WD TO 4x4 HIGH SHIFT AT SPEED ABOVE 32 KM/H (20 MPH)
  • Switch the 4WD switch to 2WD.
  • Drive the vehicle on the road and shift from 2WD to 4x4 HIGH while driving above 32 km/h (20 mph).
  • Does the transfer case shift to 4x4 HIGH satisfactorily? 
Yes The 4WD system is functioning correctly.
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 5: STRAIGHTLINE DRIVELINE WIND-UP , .
