Intermediate Shaft Removal/Installation: Notes

CAUTION:
- The universal joint could be damaged if subjected to an impact when the intermediate shaft (pinion) is disconnected. Perform the servicing carefully avoiding impact when disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the steering gear (pinion).
- If the steering wheel rotates after the steering shaft and the steering gear and linkage are disconnected, the internal parts of the clock spring could be damaged. After disconnecting the steering shaft, secure the steering wheel using tape or cable to prevent it from rotating.
NOTE:
- Rotate the steering wheel until the joint bolt on the steering column side and steering gear side reaches the removal position.
- When removing/installing the intermediate shaft, lock the adjuster lever. (Without electric tilt/telescopic)
- When installing the replacement part, do not rotate the steering shaft until the installation is completed.
- Remove the cover assembly. (right side) (See COWL GRILLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Disconnect the negative lead-acid battery terminal. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION .)
- Remove the following parts:
- Driver side front scuff plate (See FRONT SCUFF PLATE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Driver side front side trim (See FRONT SIDE TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Driver side decoration panel component (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Passenger side decoration panel component (See DECORATION PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Driver side lower panel component (See DRIVER-SIDE LOWER PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (L.H.D). .)
- Driver-side knee air bag module (See KNEE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Driver side wheel and tire (front) (See WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Driver side front splash shield No. 2 (See REMOVE DRIVER SIDE FRONT SPLASH SHIELD NO. 2 .)
- Remove using the procedure shown in the figure.
