The ETR control module with airbag (N2/2) evaluates the acceleration caused by the rear-end collision and upon exceeding a certain value triggers the squibs in the emergency tensioning retractors (R12/1, R12/2).

On vehicles with:

A check is made whether the belts are fastened. If the seat belt is not fastened  the emergency tensioning retractor is not triggered  .

On vehicles with OSR  (front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor) or ACSR  (front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition) a check is made whether the passenger seat is occupied.

If the passenger seat is not  occupied or a child seat not  recognized the emergency tensioning retractor on the passenger side is not  triggered.
