Navigation  is determination of the position of the vehicle, determination of the direction and distance to the destination (after entry of a destination) and accomplishment of measures required to reach this destination. Navigation therefore includes the following terms:

Location finding > route calculation > destination guidance

Location finding

The location of the vehicle is calculated continuously by the auto-pilot system (APS) with the aid of the following procedures:

These three procedures are compared with one another by the navigation processor (A2/30)  .

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the navigation processor (A2/30)  after entry of the destination or automatically upon deviating from the recommended route. After calculation the route is stored in the RAM in the navigation processor (A2/30)  .

With dynamic guidance (only with code 815)  the current traffic situation (construction sites, traffic jams...) are also taken into consideration in calculating the route.

Entering destination

The destination can be entered on the radio and navigation operating unit (A2/29)  and is processed by the navigation processor (A2/30)  . Only destinations can be entered which are listed on the CD-ROM.

The data read in from the CD-ROM map is indicated on the display of the operating unit. The destination entered is stored.

Guidance

After entering the destination of the radio and navigation operating unit (A2/29)  and calculation of the route by the navigation processor (A2/30)  guidance is started. Upon leaving the recommended route a new route is automatically calculated or the voice prompt "Please turn around if possible" is output.

Outside of the digitalized network of roads guidance is accomplished only via direct route indicating the distance to the destination.

IMPORTANT Outside of the CD-ROM map boundaries complete navigation is not available. The message "NO MAP" appears on the display.
