SUBJECT
SCN "VERSION" CODING OF ENGINE CONTROL MODULES
SERVICE INFORMATION
As of model year 2003, a new coding method is required in the event an engine control module is replaced. Emission regulations now require all codable (emission-relevant) electronic control modules have a Software Calibration Number (SCN) which uniquely identifies the control module version installed in the vehicle. This is done to prevent erroneuos version coding.
The SCN is a 32-digit number. It identifies both the control module software as well as the coding conforming to the specific vehicle. An example of the SCN code and Coding string number can be found below.
The SCN coding procedure for coding engine control modules will be introduced in three phases:
- Interim procedure:
An interim procedure is now in effect for obtaining SCN coding information. The coding procedure is described in the procedure below. Upon introduction of the fax procedure (below), this interim solution will no longer be valid and a revised bulletin with complete instructions will be issued.
- Fax procedure (currently not available):
- The vehicle coding information (VIN, ECM part no.) is accessed using Star Diagnosis.
- Coding information is requsted from the DCAG call center via fax.
- The electronic control module is coded.
- On-line procedure (replaces fax procedure)
A procedure is now being developed that will allow dealer technicians to access the SCN coding information via Netstar. This will eliminate the fax process and provide faster results through a direct on-line link to FDOK, a vehicle build data database. Shortly before this procedure becomes available to you, a revised bulletin with complete instructions will be issued.
PROCEDURE
- Request SCN coding information via e-mail (when replacing an engine ECM):
- E-mail the request for SCN coding information to the following e-mail address:
- Technicalinformation@mbusa.com
- Please include the following information:
- Your name
- Your e-mail address
- Dealer name and number
- Part number of the new ME control module
- Vehicle VIN
- E-mail the request for SCN coding information to the following e-mail address:
- The SCN coding information will be returned to you via e-mail and will include the following information required for coding the engine ECM:
- SCN coding
- Code string
- Test digit
- This coding information must be entered into the <perform SCN coding> menu screen in DAS by navigating though the following on screen menus: <Main groups/Control units/drive /ME2-SFI - Motor electronics/ Control unit adaptations/ Version coding/ Coding/ SCN coding/Perform SCN coding> (refer to Figures 1 - 6 for the individual menu displays).
- <Main groups/control units> (Fig 1 ).
- <Control unit groups/Drive> (Fig 2 ).
- <Drive/ME2-SFI-Motor electronics> (Fig 3 ).
- <ME2-SFI 2.8 - Motor electronics 2.8/Control unit adaptations> (Fig 4 ).
- <Control unit adaptations/version coding> (Fig 5 ).
- <Version coding/Coding> (Fig 6 ).
- <SCN coding/ Perform SCN coding> (Fig 7 ).
- Coding string
08-7D-08-7D-AC-0E-EF-FB-12-47-2B-BF-99-52-14-2C - SCN
1131531279-15-0002 - Test digit
1A-0C-9D-43
After the entry is made, STAR DIAGNOSIS verifies, on the basis of the check digit, whether the entry is correct. If errors are found in the entry, an appropriate error message is displayed.
In addition, STAR DIAGNOSIS verifies whether the coding is to be performed at the same vehicle and control module which was present in the first step for determining the VIN and part number. If the VIN or the part number of the vehicle / control module to be coded differs, an appropriate error message is likewise displayed and the coding operation cannot be performed.
The SCN and the coding string can be written into the control module only if all the checks have been completed without errors.
After the coding procedure has been successfully completed, the learning process of the drive authorization system can be performed.
