NOTE: This star bulletin has been revised to include new screen displays and updated flashing instructions to reflect the February 2003 DAS release.

SOFTWARE UPDATE VIA FLASHING ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ME-SFI 2.8)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a software update is necessary on the models listed in the table below, the update must be performed by flashing the existing control module in the vehicle using the Star Diagnosis (as of 11/02 release) together with the proper flashware CD. Please refer to the procedure below for engine control module flashing instructions.

NOTE: For vehicles as of model year 2003, ensure SCN coding information has been generated (please refer to: S-SI-07.08/001 ) prior to flashing vehicle.

PROCEDURE

  1. Connect Star Diagnosis to the vehicle (16 pin diagnostic plug).
    • Insert flashware CD into Star Diagnosis.
  2. Pre-flash requirements:
    • Battery voltage >11 volts.
    • Engine temperature >32°F.
    • Connect battery charger.
  3. Switch ignition: ON.
  4. Enter vehicle information into screen menus as required.
  5. Navigate through screen menus in the following steps to perform flashing of engine control module.

      NOTE: Disregard on-screen instructions to insert SDflash CD (this was done in step 1) select F2 to continue.

    • <Program control module/New software found> (Fig 7 ).
      NOTE: The numbers displayed on the screen (Fig 7 ) under "Engine control module" (OLD/NEW) are not actual engine control module part numbers (these numbers are for internal use).

    • <Control module is being programmed>. (Fig 8 ).
      WARNING: Engine cooling fan will run during programming.

    • After programming has been completed switch ignition: OFF.
    • Wait 10 secs. (Fig 9 ), switch ignition ON (when instructed by on-screen message).
      NOTE: After flashing, control module version will have been changed.

    • <Control module programming (Fig 10 )/ Process has been completed>: Follow onscreen instructions to erase fault memory.

    • <Sdflash Release/The process has been completed (Fig 11 ).

  6. Perform version coding:
    • For models as of MY 2003 perform SCN coding procedure (refer to S-SI-07.08/001)
    • For all other models version coding is performed using Star Diagnosis.
  7. Start engine.
  8. Disconnect battery charger.

IN CASE OF WARRANTY

Operation:

  1. 07-8820 - Engine Control Module - Flashing, Perform (07-8820) (Includes: Short Test, Flashing, Version Coding).
  2. or
  3. 07-8821 - Engine Control Module - Flashing (After Test) Perform (07-8821) (Flashing and Version Coding Only).
