COMAND, general 

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle.

The following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents, are included in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:

• Volume/tone settings, function 
• Voice control, function 
• Audio mode, function 
• HD radio (high definition radio) function (with code (EU7) HD radio) 
• Media interface function (with code (EH3) Media interface) 
• TV operation function (with code (EM8) TV tuner) 
• Navigation mode, function 
• Video mode, function

The displays and menus for the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are generated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The following applications are shown at the same time in the display on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1):

• "Tel."
• "TV" (with code (EM8) TV tuner)
• "Navi"

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) components and thus forms the communications interface.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST:

• TV tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (EM8) TV tuner)
• High definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (with code (EU7) HD radio)
• Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (EH3) Media interface)
• Sound system amplifier (N40/9) (with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7))
