Location 

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is installed in the center of the instrument panel.

Task 

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit has the following tasks:

• Central operating and display unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 
• Reads in the controls and input signals 
• Evaluation of input factors 
• Actuates output media

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit provides a structured and uniform user surface to the user.

Interior CAN 

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is a subscriber of the interior CAN. It communicates with the following control units:

• EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
• Steering column tube module (N80)

MOST 

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is a subscriber of MOST. It communicates with the following control units:

• Digital TV tuner (A90/3)
• Sound system amplifier (N40/9) (with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7))
• Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (EH3) Media interface)

Evaluation of input factors 

The input factors are processed internally in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Function 

The actuation of the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is read in and made available to the integrated central computer. The button actuations are processed further in the central computer and transferred to the other system components via the MOST or the interior CAN in the form of a message.

If the "ON" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is pressed, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is switched on or off. The volume is regulated by turning the "Volume setting" rotary switch for each set audio source. The user can switch to the required system component by pressing the menu buttons.

DVD drive 

The integrated DVD drive can be used to play audio or video CDs and DVDs (including in MP3 format).
