General information on navigation
The navigation module is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The navigation system includes these functions:
- Position determination
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoom
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system.
The navigation system consists of the following subfunctions:
- Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
- Route guidance through voice output
The navigation system can be activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Control panels on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with model 463.247/248/254/270/303/340/341 with code (EL1) LINGUATRONIC voice control system or with model 463.249/271 as of model year 07.5, YoM 07)
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information:
- Country or state (model 463.249/271 only)
- Place name
- Road
- Intersection or house number (depending on the availability of the data)
- Town center
- ZIP code
- Special destinations (Points of Interest (POI))
- Destination entry via map
After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated. The following computer models can be selected:
- "Avoid freeway"
- "Avoid ferry or vehicle shipment"
- "Avoid tunnels"
In addition, the following route options can be selected:
- "Quickest route"
- "Shortest route"
- "Dynamic route"
- "Avoid toll road"
- "Avoid vignette roads"
The following submenus are supported in the "Special destinations" menu:
- "Location"
- "Area around last destination"
- "Area around other locations"
- "Extraregional destinations"
After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The search radius for a category is usually approx. 20 km, but certain categories, such as airports, have a search radius covering the entire country.
Function sequence
The data entered for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation) is calculated via the navigation system that is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The route is then calculated taking the configured options into consideration. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed.
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.
