The side airbag unit is located in a housing which contains the airbag which is folded up, the hybrid gas generator and the squib. A predetermined fracture area for the outlet of the airbag is located on the front side of the housing. The electrical connection for the squib is located on the back of the housing. If the electrical connection is disconnected, the squib coupling is short-circuited automatically via a short-circuit bridge.

The side airbag units are fitted with hybrid-type inflators. Hybrid-type inflators provide the following advantages compared to standard inflators they are:
