Remove/install COMAND control unit - AR82.85-P-1100SY

MODEL 221.0 /1 with CODE (529) HIGH Class Japan

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES In order to prevent damage to panels, covers and coverings in the vicinity of the center console and the instrument panel, they must be protected by suitable guards    
NOTES Notes on avoiding damage to fiber optical cables during repair work   AH82.60-P-0001-05AK
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   AH54.00-P-0001-01A
1.1 Temporarily store basic data from the COMAND control unit (A40/3) in STAR DIAGNOSIS When replacing the COMAND control unit (A40/3).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Transfer temporarily stored basic data to the new COMAND control unit (A40/3).
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A
STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system *WH58.30-Z-1048-13A
2 Switch off ignition and withdraw transmitter key or Keyless Go start/stop button from the EIS [EZS] control unit IMPORTANT Keyless Go start/stop button only for vehicles with code (889) Keyless Go.  
3 Unclip covering (2) using long wedge SPECIAL TOOL Figure
4 Remove bolts (5) Rechargeable drill / screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A
5 Open kinematic frame (1) and open covers (6) of screws (7) by folding inwards    
6 Remove screws (7) and close covers (6) Rechargeable drill / screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A
7 Close and remove kinematic frame (1)    
8 Open stowage compartment (4) and remove beverage holder (10)    
9 Remove cover plug (9) and screws (11) Rechargeable drill / screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A
10 Remove stowage compartment (4) upwards    
11 Pull out ashtray (3) until the electrical connector can be disconnected from the ashtray (3) NOTES Carefully pull ashtray (3) out of the center console (8) in order to avoid damage to the ashtray (3), to the center console (8) and to the instrument panel.  
12 Disconnect electrical connector from the ashtray (3) and remove ashtray (3)    
13 Loosen bolts (12) IMPORTANT Screws (12) remain in the COMAND control unit (A40/3).

14 Carefully pull out the COMAND control unit (A40/3) until the cable guard grid (13) can be removed NOTESInstallation:  Carefully push in the COMAND control unit (A40/3) in order to avoid damaging the wiring harnesses from kinking or squeezing.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  If necessary, tie wiring harnesses together using cable tie (14) for stability.
It must be possible to install the COMAND control unit (A40/3) without any noticeable resistance. The wiring harnesses must be pushed under the COMAND control unit (A40/3) if required. The wiring harnesses can be accessed with a flat hand by the ashtray (3), below the center console (8) (arrow A).
 
15 Disengage the left and right catch hook at the cable guard grid (13) using a suitable screwdriver (arrow B), slide cable guard grid (13) upwards and then remove to the rear IMPORTANT Start with the left catch hook.
NOTES Fully disengage catch hooks before moving the cable guard grid (13) upward. The catch hooks otherwise could shear off on the sharp-edged housing of the COMAND control unit (A40/3). In this case, the cable guard grid (13) must be replaced.
NOTESInstallation:  The wiring harnesses must be routed outwards on the right side under the cable guard grid (13), otherwise the wiring harnesses could be damaged from kinking or squeezing when sliding in the COMAND control unit (A40/3).
 
16 Disconnect all connectors from the COMAND control unit (A40/3) NOTES Do not disconnect the FAKRA (DIN Standards Committee for Motor Vehicles) antenna connector using force, as this will lead to the FAKRA sleeves on the COMAND control unit (A40/3) tearing off. Remove black fuse from connector if necessary in order to open the interlock with a suitable tool.
NOTESInstallation:  In order to avoid damage to the wiring harnesses, the wiring harnesses must be checked for twisting prior to connecting the connectors. If necessary, eliminate existing twisting by sorting the wiring harnesses.
IMPORTANT The number of connectors can vary, depending on equipment.
 
17 Remove COMAND control unit (A40/3)    
18 Install in the reverse order
