Deploy supplemental restraint system, function - GF91.60-P-2001SX

MODEL 216.3, 221.0 /1 up to Model Year 8

The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) determines the acceleration that is affecting the vehicle using its integrated sensor and the following other sensors:

A differentiation is made between:

The relevant restraint equipment is actuated on the basis of the determined values, depending on the threshold values.

Head-on collision

The restraint systems control unit takes signals from the following components into consideration in the event of a frontal impact:

The following information is also evaluated for recording the situation in the vehicle interior:

Front passenger seat occupation status (as of 1.6.07 only USA ONLYor with code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]))

The restraint systems control unit uses the current occupancy to decide whether to suppress the front passenger airbag unit or to use 1-stage or 2-stage deployment.

Driver seat belt buckle status

If the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/1) detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, instead of the driver seat belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor the driver airbag unit is deployed with advanced ignition timing.

Front passenger seat belt buckle status

If the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/2) detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, instead of the front passenger seat belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor the front passenger airbag unit is deployed with advanced ignition timing.

This only applies, however, if the front passenger seat is known to be occupied. If the seat is not occupied, neither the buckle emergency tensioning retractor nor the front passenger airbag unit are deployed.

Rear seat belt buckle status (model 221 with code (223) Rear bench seat with electrically adjustable outer seats with PRE-SAFE positioning function for outer seats and outer head restraints)

For the left and right rear seats, this check is implemented via the left rear seat belt buckle switch (S68/11) and via the right rear seat belt buckle switch (S68/12).

If the seat belt of a rear seat is not engaged in the seat belt buckle, the corresponding rear ETR units are not deployed.

Depending on the severity of the impact and the situation in the vehicle interior, the following squibs for the respective restraint systems can be triggered:

Additional with model 221 as of 1.9.06:

Side-on collision

The restraint systems control unit takes signals from the following components into consideration in the event of a side impact:

The following information is also evaluated for recording the situation in the vehicle interior:

Front passenger seat occupation status (as of 1.6.07 only USA ONLYor with code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]))

The restraint systems control unit bases its decision on triggering the front passenger sidebag unit on the current occupation status.

Depending on the severity of the impact and the situation in the vehicle interior, the following squibs for the respective restraint systems can be triggered:

In order to detect a side impact in the door area, the restraint systems control unit evaluates the air pressure values via the pressure sensors in the respective door and the acceleration values in the vicinity of the B-pillar via the airbag system assist. If the air pressure value in a door increases accordingly (e.g. by the door being pushed in from the outside) or the acceleration values exceed an appropriate threshold, the sidebag units and windowbag units are deployed at the relevant side of the vehicle.

Rear-end collision

In the event of a rear-end collision the restraint systems control unit determines the acceleration acting on the vehicle with the aid of the following components:

The following information is also evaluated for recording the situation in the vehicle interior:

Driver seat belt buckle status

If the driver seat belt buckle switch detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, the driver-side seat belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor unit is not deployed.

Front passenger seat belt buckle status

If the front passenger seat belt buckle switch detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, the front passenger side seat belt buckle emergency tensioning retractor unit is not deployed.

Rear seat belt buckle status

If the seat belt of a rear seat is not engaged in the seat belt buckle, the corresponding rear ETR units are not deployed.

Depending on the severity of the impact and the situation in the vehicle interior, the following squibs for the respective restraint systems can be triggered:

Additional with model 221 as of 1.9.06:

Rolling along the longitudinal vehicle axis

In the event of a rollover, the restraint systems control unit determines the acceleration acting on the vehicle with the aid of the following components:

The following squibs of the corresponding restraint devices can be actuated in the event of a rollover:
