Moderately severe head-on collision  (1st triggering threshold) In the event of a moderately severe head-on collision the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers moderate deceleration. In this type of impact the seat belt restraining system function in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensures the best possible degree of passenger safety. The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends the ignition pulse to the following system components:

The driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors will only be deployed if the occupants are wearing their seat belts.

Protection for non-belted vehicle occupants

A seat belt buckle query is performed at the driver seat and front passenger seat.

Driver

If the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) is not operated, in a moderately severe head-on collision the first stage of the driver airbag (driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13)) is deployed instead of the driver ETR [GUS] squib (R12/1).

FRONT PASSENGER

If the front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) is not operated during a moderately severe head-on collision, the first stage of the front passenger airbag (front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4)) will be deployed instead of the front passenger ETR [GUS] squib (R12/2). This only applies when the front passenger seat is recognized by the passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition (B48) as occupied.

Severe head-on collision  (2nd or 3rd triggering threshold) In the event of a severe front impact the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers a major deceleration. In this type of impact the airbag and seat belt system restraining functions in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensure the best possible degree of passenger safety. The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends the ignition pulse to the following system components:

If necessary because of the severity of the impact, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) also sends the ignition pulse to the following system components:

IMPORTANT If the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected a child seat fitted to the front passenger seat, the airbag at the front passenger side will never be deployed.
