Navigation mode, function - GF82.85-P-2012LE
MODEL 216, 221 with CODE (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) as of model year 2009 /YoM 08
MODEL 216, 221 with CODE (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system) as of model year 2009 /YoM 08
Function requirements, general
- Circuit 30g ON
- Signals from at least three Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites present
Navigation mode, general
The navigation module is integrated into the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
The navigation system includes these functions:
- Position determination
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoom
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information in the "Destination" submenu:
- Country (without code (494) USA version) or Federal State (with code (494) USA version)
- Place name
- Road
- Intersection or house number (depending on the availability of the data)
- Town center
- ZIP code
- Point(s) of Interest (POI))
- Destination entry via map
After entering or calling up a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated.
The following options can be selected in the "Mode" submenu:
- "Fast route"
- "Dynamic route"
- "Economic route"
- "Short route"
- "Avoid freeways"
- "Avoid toll road"
- "Avoid toll sticker roads" (without code (494) USA version)
- "Avoid tunnels"
- "Avoid ferries"
- "Avoid vehicle transportation"
The navigation module uses the entered data to calculate the data required to reach the destination (navigation). To this end, the navigation system is equipped with the following functions, which are described in separate documents:
- Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function
- Route guidance through voice output, function
Function sequence for navigation mode
The route is calculated in accordance with the options set. If it should not be possible to adhere to the options, then the configured options are ignored for the stretch in question and a corresponding message is output visually as well as acoustically. The set criteria and options can be displayed and changed at any time. After successful computation the route is shown on the map on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or on the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW) and also with the aid of arrow pictograms in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). The "The route has been calculated" acoustic warning is issued.
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the precalculated route, the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed. The corresponding signals are sent over the central CAN (CAN F) to the instrument cluster.
Dynamic route guidance: The dynamic route guidance takes the current traffic situation into consideration.
The navigation system can be operated with the following controls:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), and as of 1.6.09)
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are provided over the following route:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN
- COMAND control unit
When entered using the front central operating unit, the control signals are forwarded over the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the COMAND controller unit.
Voice input is made over the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1).
This procedure should be performed with the vehicle at a standstill, where possible. To ensure that the on-board electrical system voltage does not run down, the engine should be running here or the vehicle supplied with external voltage. If the navigation DVD is inserted in the COMAND controller unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the map data is to be installed.
For vehicles up to 31.5.09 the voice commands are read in by the voice control system control unit (VCS [SBS]) (N41/3) (with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) and forwarded over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the COMAND controller unit. For vehicles as of 1.6.09, the COMAND controller unit reads in the voice commands directly.
Update the map data
The map data is installed on the hard disk of the COMAND controller unit. In order to install new card data, this must be copied from a navigation DVD.
Regulations concerning the privacy of personal data mean that when new map data are installed a release code has first to be entered.
After confirmation the installation is started (t = 10 to 120 min). Navigation is only possible following complete installation. If an installation process is interrupted, navigation is no longer possible and the installation process has to be repeated. Following successful installation, a corresponding message appears and the DVD is automatically ejected.
