The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Display SMS messages on mobile phone screen and on the COMAND display (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or the SPLITVIEW display (with code (867) SPLITVIEW)
- Delete SMS
- Reading out SMS message
- Inbox list of most recently received SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either sender or start of text for each text message)
- Composing and sending SMS messages
The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for receiving SMS message
- Function sequence, call up messaging application
- Function sequence for displaying SMS message
- Function sequence for composing and transmitting SMS message
- Function sequence for reading SMS message aloud
Function sequence for receiving SMS message
Incoming SMS are received over the following route:
Up to 31.5.09:
Incoming SMS messages are received over the telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49) (model 221) or the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) (model 216).
- With code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "cell phone", UPCI [UHI] system
The signals are received over a direct line by the telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53) (model 221 with code (228) Stationary heater) and sent over a direct line to the E-net compensator (A28/3).
- With code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada:
The signals are received by the frequency switchover control unit (N96) and sent over a direct line to the cell phone antenna amplifier (A28/2).
Via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder the signals are received by the mobile phone. The mobile phone sends the SMS over the UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) over a direct line to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1). The UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit receives the SMS and sends it over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
As of 1.6.09
The signal for an incoming SMS message is received via the telephone and GPS roof antenna (model 221) or the telephone antenna (model 216) and transmitted via the E-net compensator directly to the Bluetooth module (A34/7) and received by the inserted mobile phone via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder.
The mobile phone receives the SMS message and transmits it via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder to the Bluetooth module and then over a Bluetooth connection to the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91). The Bluetooth antenna transmits the SMS message via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit. On receiving a new SMS message, an acoustic signal is given by the COMAND controller unit and a symbol is displayed on the COMAND display or SPLITVIEW display.
Function sequence, call up messaging application
The SMS application for managing (e.g. reading or erasing) text messages is selected using the "Telephone" menu item and then "SMS", which takes place using the front central operating unit (A40/9).
The menu is displayed on the COMAND display or SPLITVIEW display.
Up to 31.5.09:
The control signals are routed to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit via the following components:
- Telematics CAN (CAN A)
- COMAND control unit
- MOST
As of 1.6.09
The request to call up the SMS application is transmitted directly to the front central operating unit via COU [ZBE] LIN (LIN A1). The front central operating unit sends the signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
Function sequence for displaying SMS message
After selecting the "SMS" menu item, the SMS messages available in the COMAND controller unit are selected and displayed. They are displayed via the COMAND display or SPLITVIEW display.
Additional function requirements for creating and sending an SMS
