4MATIC transfer case, general

The transfer case is integrated into the rear section of the 7-speed automatic transmission.

What makes it so special is its single-stage side output with integrated universal joint (6).

The single-stage version, in contrast to the dual-stage side output of previous transfer cases, no longer requires a spur gear set including the bearing. This acts positively on efficiency, weight and the noise characteristics of the drivetrain.

IMPORTANT In a repair case, the transfer case cannot be separately replaced. It has to be completely replaced along with the automatic transmission.
