Location
The upper control panel (UCP) control unit is located in the center of the instrument panel above the gearshift lever (with transmission 711.6 or 716.6) or electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (with transmission 722.6 or 722.9).
Task
The upper control panel (UCP) control unit reads in the integrated switches and buttons, controls the light emitting diodes (LED) of the integrated switches and buttons, is the master control unit for the seat heaters (SIH) (with CODE H16 (Heater for driver seat) or with CODE H15 (Heater for front passenger seat)) and is connected to the interior CAN (CAN B).
Generally the UCP control unit controls the following systems with the corresponding functions or supports the master control units:
- Electric sliding door for load compartment (E-LST), with CODE T55 (Electrical actuation for right sliding door) or with CODE T56 (Electrical actuation for left sliding door)
- Switch request E-LST "OPEN" or "CLOSE" for left or right E-LST
- SIH, with CODE H16 (Heater for driver seat)
- Actuation of left front seat cushion heater pad (R13/1)
- Actuation of left front backrest heater pad (R13/2)
- SIH, with CODE H15 (Heater for front passenger seat)
- Actuation of right front seat cushion heater pad (R13/3)
- Actuation of right front backrest heater pad (R13/4)
- Heated rear window (HHS), with CODE H22 (Heated rear window) or with CODE W78 (Window in liftgate or hinged rear door with wipe/washer system)
- Switch request for HHS "ON" or "OFF"
- Heated windshield (HFS), with CODE F49 (Heated windshield)
- Switch request for HFS "ON" or "OFF"
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
- Switch request for acceleration skid control (ASR) "ON" or "OFF"

The upper control panel control unit (UCP) reads in the following switches and buttons:
- Left sliding door button (N72/1s1), with CODE T56 (Electrical actuation for left sliding door)
- Left seat heater button (N72/1s2), with CODE H16 (Heater for driver seat)
- Rear window heater button (N72/1s3), with CODE H22 (Heated rear window) or with CODE W78 (Window in liftgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system)
- Windshield heater button (N72/1s4), with CODE F49 (Heated windshield)
- ASR OFF button (N72/1s5)
- Hazard warning system switch (N72/1s6)
- Interior central locking button
- PARKTRONIC OFF button (N72/1s9), with CODE EZ8 (Parktronic system (PTS))

The upper control panel (UCP) control unit evaluates the switching states, messages and feedback from the individual systems and then controls the following switch and button LEDs in the appropriate manner:
- The LED of left sliding door button, with CODE T56 (Electrical actuation for left sliding door), is permanently actuated or it flashes on and off.
- The LEDs of left seat heater button, with CODE H16 (Heater for driver seat), are actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the rear window heater button, with CODE H22 (Heated rear window) or with CODE W78 (Window in liftgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system), is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the windshield heater button, with CODE F49 (Heated windshield), is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of the hazard warning system switch flashes on and off.
- The LED of interior central locking button is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of PARKTRONIC OFF button, with CODE EZ8 (Parktronic system (PTS)), is actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LEDs of right seat heater button, with CODE H15 (Heater for front passenger seat), are actuated permanently or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of right sliding door button, with CODE T55 (Electrical actuation for right sliding door), is permanently actuated or it flashes on and off.
- The LED of ECO button, with CODE MJ7 (ECO start), is actuated permanently.
- The LED of Blind Spot Assist button, with CODE JA7 (Blind Spot Assist), is actuated permanently.
- The LED of Lane Keeping Assist button, with CODE JW5 (Lane Keeping Assist), is actuated permanently.
- The LED of COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST button, with CODE JA6 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST), is actuated permanently.

The respective switches of the upper control panel control unit (UCP) are designed as rocker switches. If the upper control panel (UCP) control unit detects the actuation of the respective button for t ≥ 25 s, then the signal will be ignored and a fault stored. No actuation signal is sent to the interior CAN.
When the respective button is actuated again, the upper control panel (UCP) control unit must detect beforehand the rest position of the respective button for t > 1 s.
