Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The COMAND controller unit receives control and audio signals from the following control units via MOST:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, up to 31.5.09 and as of 1.6.10)
- SDAR/high definition tuner control unit (N87/8) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, as of 1.6.09 up to 31.5.10)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)
Telematics CAN
The signals are read in by the COMAND controller unit via telematics CAN. The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Interior CAN
The signals are read in by the COMAND controller unit via interior CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding components are actuated.
Actuation of system components
- Audio output (speaker) (without code (810) Sound system)
- Video output: Low Voltage Differential Signal (LVDS) line
- Switching voltage for mobile phone cradle (A34/15) via Bluetooth module (A34/7) (with code (386) Mobile phone or code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada)
- Microphone output to emergency call system control unit (N123/4) (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system)
- COMAND fan motor
Design
The following components are integrated in the COMAND controller unit:
- Operating panel for controlling the audio, navigation and telematics functions
- Radio tuner
- Single DVD drive (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))
- DVD changer (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer)
- Card reader for PCMCIA cards
- Bluetooth receiver for basic telephony
- Central computer
- Navigation processor (without code (528) COMAND with DVD changer)
- Hard disk (without code (528) COMAND with DVD changer)
- Audio amplifier (without code (810) Sound system)
Function
The operating requests that are issued via the button panels on the COMAND controller unit are read in by the COMAND controller unit itself and made available to the central computer, where they are processed and forwarded to the relevant system components accordingly via MOST, telematics CAN or interior CAN.
If the "ON" button on the COMAND controller unit is pressed, the COMAND controller unit switches on. The volume for the relevant audio source is regulated by turning the "ON" button. The function keys in the left-hand button panel are used to switch over to the audio source selected by the user.
Using the integrated DVD drive, data from the navigation updates can be taken over from a DVD (without code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer) or an audio or video CD or DVD can be played.
The navigation processor integrated in the COMAND controller unit (without code (528) COMAND with DVD changer) calculates the location using the incoming antenna signals and, after entering the destination, the route of the vehicle.
A turn rate sensor is integrated into the navigation processor. This determines the vehicle's change in direction. A calibration is not required.
The voice commands via VCS [SBS] are processed and evaluated in the COMAND controller unit. The voice outputs for the dialogue with the user are generated in the COMAND controller unit.
Variants
The COMAND controller unit is available in the following variants:
- COMAND controller unit, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
- COMAND controller unit, with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
- COMAND controller unit, with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer
Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST users. The diagnostic communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN. The diagnostic communication between the front SAM control unit and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) connected to the IS tester is performed via diagnostic CAN (CAN D).
