REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  when touching components on vehicles with high-voltage on-board electrical system Do not touch components and open lines of the high-voltage on-board electrical system. Persons who wear electronic implants (e.g. cardiac pacemakers), must not  carry out any work on high-voltage on-board electrical systems. AS54.00-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

1 Perform disable for the high-voltage on-board electrical system MODEL 222.004/057/104/157/163 AR54.10-P-1150LF
2 Remove the central and front sections of the lower engine compartment paneling MODEL 222 AR61.20-P-1105LF
    MODEL 231 AR61.20-P-1105RK
3 Remove bolt (1) Turning rack-and-pinion steering to center position and fitting steering coupling
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Note reference for installing rack-and-pinion steering.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, steering coupling to rack-and-pinion steering *BA46.10-P-1002-01M 
4 Deactivate easy entry/exit function for driver's seat and steering wheel MODEL 222, 231 with CODE 275 (Memory package)  
5 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling (2) has been detached. Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

6 Remove bolt (3) and place heat shield (4) down towards the front If necessary  
7 Remove bolt (7) and remove steering coupling (2) from bottom steering shaft (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut/bolt, steering coupling to steering shaft *BA46.10-P-1001-01M 
8 Pull the lower steering shaft (5) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (2) NOTES
Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage).
Otherwise the lower steering shaft (5) may be damaged.
 
9 Detach steering coupling (2) from rack-and-pinion steering and remove    
10 Detach locking plate (6) from steering coupling (2) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Insert new, self-locking nut into existing locking plate (6). The locking plate (6) is not available as a replacement part.  
11 Install in the reverse order
