Task
The SAM control unit has the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
Location
The SAM control unit is located at the front right on the A-pillar.

Reading in of sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Center console switch LIN (LIN B12)
- Roof LIN (LIN B13)
- Battery sensor-LIN (LIN B15)
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
Direct line
The signals from the following components are read via direct lines:
- Left fuel tank fill level indicator sensor (B4/1)
- Right fuel tank fuel level indicator fill level sensor (B4/2)
- Outside temperature sensor (B14)
- Additional battery for ECO start/stop function (G1/13) (with CODE B03 (ECO start/stop function))
- Tank cap central locking actuator (M14/10)
- Exterior lights switch (S1)
- Right front brake wear sensor (S10/2)
- Brake fluid level switch (S11)
- Coolant level switch (S41)
- Windshield washer system washer fluid level switch (S42)
- Right engine hood contact switch (S62/42) (with CODE B03 (ECO start/stop function) and except CODE U60 (Pedestrian protection))
- Left engine hood contact switch (S62/43) (with CODE 551 (Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW])) and except CODE U60 (Pedestrian protection))
- Circuit 54, brake light request
- Supplemental Restraint System control unit (N2/10), crash signal
Center console switch LIN
The signals of the following components are read-in over the center console switch LIN:
- Driver seat control unit (N32/1) (except CODE 275 (Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirror)))
- Front passenger seat control unit (N32/2) (except CODE P64 (Memory package))
- Lower control panel control unit (N72)
Roof LIN
The signals of the following components are read-in over the roof LIN:
- Inside rear-view mirror (A67) (with CODE 231 (Garage door opener) or CODE 232 (Garage door opener with frequency 284-390 MHz) or CODE 249 (Automatically dimming inside rear-view mirror and outside mirror (driver))
- Rain/light sensor (B38/2)
- Overhead control panel control unit (N70)
- Interior temperature sensor with integrated fan (N70b1)
Battery sensor LIN
The signals from the following components are read in via the battery sensor LIN:
- Battery sensor (B95)
- Upper control panel control unit (N72/1)
Interior CAN
The signals are read in by the SAM control unit via the interior CAN.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see appropriate block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Controlling functions
The SAM control unit controls the following functions:
- Energy management
- Exterior lights
- Windshield wiper system and spray nozzle hose heater
- Seat heater (with CODE 873 (Left and right front seat heaters))
- Seat ventilation (with CODE 401 (Front comfort seats, incl. seat heating and seat ventilation))

The actuation of the components takes place via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Center console switch LIN
- Right liftgate license plate lamp (E19/4)
- Center brake lamp (E21)
- Additional battery for ECO start/stop function, charge/discharge (with CODE B03 (ECO start/stop function))
- Roof LIN
- Battery sensor LIN
- Interior CAN

The following components are actuated via direct lines:
- Left front lamp unit (E1)
- Left daytime running lights headlamp (E1/3)
- Right front lamp unit (E2)
- Right daytime running lights headlamp (E2/3)
- Left rear lamp unit (E3)
- Inner left rear lamp unit (E3/1)
- Right rear lamp unit (E4)
- Inner right rear lamp unit (E4/1)
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)
- Left rear footwell lamp (E17/17) (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
- Right rear footwell lamp (E17/18) (with CODE 876 (Interior lights package))
- Left liftgate license plate lamp (E19/3)
- Windshield washer system pump (M5/1)
- Headlamp cleaning system pump (M5/2) (with CODE 600 (Headlamp cleaning system))
- Tank cap central locking actuator
- Spray nozzle hose heater (R2/11) (with CODE 875 (Heated windshield washer system))
- Circuit 54 on trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) (with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch))
Center console switch LIN
The following components are actuated over the center console switch LIN:
- Driver seat control unit (except CODE 275 (Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirror)))
- Front passenger seat control unit (except CODE P64 (Memory package))
- Lower control panel control unit (with CODE 430 (On & Offroad package))
Roof LIN
The following components are actuated over the roof LIN:
- Inside rear-view mirror (with CODE 231 (Garage door opener) or CODE 232 (Garage door opener with frequency 284-390 MHz) or CODE 249 (Automatically dimming inside rear-view mirror and outside mirror (driver))
- Overhead control panel control unit
Battery sensor LIN
The following component is actuated over the battery sensor LIN:
- Upper control panel control unit
Interior CAN
The signals are transmitted by the SAM control unit via the interior CAN. The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see appropriate block diagram or function schematic).
Actuation of relay
The following relays are switched by the SAM control unit:
- Circuit 15R2 socket relay (F4kA)
- Circuit 15 relay (F4kE)
- Rear window wiper relay (F4kF)
- Circuit 15R1 relay (F4kG)
- Fanfare horn relay (F58kJ)
- Wiper speed 1/2 relay (F58kK)
- Windshield wiper ON/OFF relay (F58kL)
- Circuit 15 relay (F58kR)
