Common rail diesel injection (CDI), function

The "CR-60" Engine management system consists of the ommon Rail iesel Injection (CDI) and its electrical connections to the sensors and actuators of Engine 642.8.

The abbreviated designation "CR-60+" means:

CR = Common Rail

1 = CDI 60  as an ongoing generation designation for diesel direct injection technology

The "common rail" is the line shared by all injectors for fuel delivery. The fuel upstream of the injection is stored in this common line. Therefore a common rail system is also called "storage injection". The entire Engine management system is located in the CDI control unit (N3/9). Sensor data are read in directly by the Engine management and indirectly via the CAN network and the respective actuators are actuated. The individual functions and systems of the Engine management are controlled and coordinated by the CDI control unit.

The following table provides a model and major assembly overview:

Sales designation Model Motor Transmission Engine management Notes
Model series 166.0
ML 350 CDI 4MATIC Blue EFFICIENCY 166.023 642.826 722.903 CR-60
ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATI C166.024 642.826 722.903 CR-60
Model series 166.8
ML 350 CDI 4MATIC Blue EFFICIENCY 166.823 642.826 722.903 CR-60
GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC 166.824 642.824, 642.826 722.903 CR-60

The Engine management is subdivided into the following systems:

Base functions

IMPORTANT Diagnosis

For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes of the Engine management system can be read out and deleted using Xentry Diagnostics, and individual diagnostic functions can be specifically actuated.

IMPORTANT Transport mode

In transport mode various functions of the Engine management are limited. Further information are available in the energy management function. If the kilometer reading on the vehicle is more than 250 km, the system condition "vehicle transport mode" is automatically deactivated and can then no longer be reactivated by the diagnostic tester.

IMPORTANT Variant coding

With variant coding the following vehicle versions and equipment can, for example, be coded using XENTRY Diagnostics:

IMPORTANT Flash programming

The Engine management in the CDI control unit is flashable, i.e. the entire software of the control unit can be exchanged (replaced) using Xentry Diagnostics. The software required for control unit programming can be found on the Star Diagnosis Update DID.

IMPORTANT CAN network

The CDI control unit exchanges data via the connected drive train CAN (CAN C), chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) and drive train sensor CAN (CAN I) (with code U42 (BLUETEC (SCR) diesel exhaust treatment) with other control units integrated in the CAN network. The CDI control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the three CAN bus systems. The CDI control unit is also connected to the drive train LIN (LIN C1) and exchanges data over it.

IMPORTANT Exhaust emissions standard

Engine 642.8 complies with the EU-5 exhaust emissions standard. Vehicles with code U42 (BLUETEC (SCR) diesel exhaust treatment) fulfill the EU-6 exhaust emissions standard or the BIN5 LEVII exhaust emissions standard for the USA.

Engine 642.8 is characterized by the following components:
