Function
- Operating elements
- DVD drive
- Navigation and GPS control unit
- Turn rate sensor (gyrosensor)
- Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
- Card reader for SD memory card
Operating elements
The status of the buttons on the operating panel of the COMAND controller unit are read in and made available to the arithmetic unit. The button operations undergo further processing in the arithmetic unit and are forwarded via the MOST, the telematics CAN or the interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the ON button on the COMAND controller unit is pressed, the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The volume is regulated for each audio source set by turning the ON button. The switch panel for functions is used to switch over to the audio source desired by the user.
In the event of a system fault or system crash, pressing the "ON" button for approx. 8 s will reboot the COMAND controller unit.
DVD drive
With the aid of the integrated DVD drive, audio CDs/DVDs or video DVDs can be played and data (e.g. updates) from the navigation DVD can be stored on the internal hard drive.
Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation processor is integrated into the COMAND controller unit and calculates the location of the vehicle using the incoming antenna signals. It also calculates the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.
Turn rate sensor (gyrosensor)
The turn rate sensor determines vehicle direction changes. It is installed into the navigation processor. Calibration is not required.
Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The voice commands are processed and evaluated in the COMAND controller unit. The voice outputs for the dialog with the user are generated in the COMAND controller unit.
Card reader for SD memory card
With the aid of the integrated card reader, audio files can be played from an SD memory card and data can be stored on the hard drive and subsequently retrieved.
On vehicles as of 15.07.2013 the card reader can also read SDXC cards. To save data from the COMAND controller unit onto the SD card, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) protection can be activated. If PIN protection is activated then the specified PIN has to be entered first before any data can be saved onto the SD card.
Variants
The COMAND controller unit is available in the following variants:
- With CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) (Hard disk and single DVD drive, as of 15.07.2013 also with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW))
- With CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) (hard disk and DVD changer, as of 15.07.2013 also with CODE (867) SPLITVIEW))
- With CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer) (DVD changer)
Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST users. Diagnostic communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the SAM control unit (N10) via the interior CAN. Diagnostic communication between the SAM control unit and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) connected to the ISE tester occurs via diagnostic CAN (CAN D).
