The "Software Calibration Number", SCN for short, is a statutory obligation in Europa and USA for all control units relevant to exhaust emissions. Therefore control unit software and coding of a control unit must be clearly identifiable by means of the SCN. To meet the legal requirements control units relevant to exhaust emissions are therefore coded with the SCN process since model year 2002.

This service information describes the coding of a control unit with the SCN process. In the process the coding data determination is subdivided into the following variants up to now:

1. Online: Online SCN coding
2. Offline: Offline SCN coding

1. Online: Online SCN coding 

   A precondition for the online process is a linked Star Diagnosis device and a user authorization for the "SDflash" application. The Star Diagnosis device can be connected to the central system of the DCAG via LAN (local area network) or WLAN wireless local area network.

   Procedure for online SCN coding of a control unit 

   With the linked Star Diagnosis device the coding data is determined with the "SDflash" online application via the DCAG central systems (LAN/WLAN) and afterwards transmitted to the control unit with DAS (Diagnosis Assistance System).

   In DAS, the SCN online process is accessed either under the menu item "control unit adaptations" or under "commissioning" and is divided into 3 steps. These steps are to be carried out in sequence.

   1. Read out vehicle data for online SCN coding from the control unit with DAS.
   2. Determine SCN coding and coding string online via SDflash.
   3. Carry out SCN coding with DAS.
2. Offline: Offline SCN coding 

   In the event of missing, direct connection to the central systems of DCAG there is the facility of ordering the SCN coding data per fax printout from DAS at the User Help Desk. These are then either supplied via an answer fax or via a CD (SCN Repair CD).

   Procedure for online SCN coding of a control unit 

   The entry into the Offline-SCN-process takes place in DAS either under the menu item "control unit adaptation" or "commissioning" and is divided into two steps. These two steps should be carried out in sequence.

   1. Read out vehicle data for the Offline SCN coding per fax. with DAS from the control unit.

      Either:

      Fill in the "Software Calibration Number" application form in DAS, print out and send to the specified fax number.

      The user receives an answer fax with coding data.

      Either:

      Fill in the "SCN Repair CD" application form in DAS, print out and send to the specified fax number. Once the reply fax and order for the SCN repair CD has been received, the CD will be delivered to the user. After coding the control unit the SCN (software calibration number) repair CD should be destroyed and disposed of. This process should be documented on the FDOK (vehicle documentation system) screen 2116.

   2. Carry out Offline SCN coding per fax with DAS.

      Either:

      Manual input of coding data in DAS.

      or:

      Insertion of the SCN repair CD for transmitting the coding data into the control unit.
