Common rail diesel injection (CDI), general
The common rail is designated as storage injection. Pressure generation (by the high-pressure pump (M41/3)) and the injection (directly into the cylinder) are separate. The fuel under high pressure is available for all cylinder in the common storage place (common rail) for
The entire engine control system is located in the CDI control unit (N3/28).
Sensor data are sent directly by the engine timing and are read in indirectly via the Control Area Network (CAN) network and the corresponding actuators are actuated. The individual functions and systems of the engine control system are controlled and coordinated by the CDI control unit.
The 2nd generation of the Common Rail systems from Delphi is used for engine 651.
The following output and associated exhaust variants are available:
- engine 651.940, model 639.6/70
- engine 651.955, model 906 (with code (MG2) Engine OM 651 DE 22 LA, 95 kw (129 HP) 3800 RPM):

For diagnostic purposes, the Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS) can be used to read out and delete the engine control fault codes, and to actuate certain specific diagnostic functions.
The CDI control unit exchanges data via the attached engine compartment-CAN (CAN C) and interior CAN (CAN B) with other control units which are integrated in the CAN network.
The CDI control unit communicates with the following components via the drive LIN (LIN C1):
- Alternator with LIN bus (G2/7) (for model 906)
- Glow output stage (N14/5)
The engine control in the CDI control unit is flash programmable, that is the software in the CDI control unit can in part be replaced using the DAS. The software required for control unit programming can be found on the STAR DIAGNOSIS DAS Update DVD.
The following vehicle versions and equipment are examples of items that can be coded with the DAS using variant coding:
- Vehicle model
- National version
- Exhaust variants
- Transmission version

Engine 651 complies with EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and is characterized by the following features:
- 2 Lanchester balance shafts
- Gear drive in combination with a drive chain on the flywheel side for driving the high-pressure pump, oil pump, Lanchester balance shafts and the two camshafts
- Oil pump integrated in the crankcase
- Oil spray nozzles valve (Y127/1) for controlling the oil spray nozzles for piston crown cooling
- EGR with a coolant cooled pre-cooler and EGR cooler with a switchable bypass duct
- Cylinder head with 2-piece water jacket
- Rapid glowing system with glow output stage
- Load-level controlled preinjection and postinjection
- For engine 651 cylinder 1 injector (Y76/14), cylinder 2 injector (Y76/15), cylinder 3 injector (Y76/16) and cylinder 4 injector (Y76/17) are fitted with magnetic technology and a venturi integrated in the high-pressure pump
- Engine 651.956 is fitted with a turbocharger with adjustable guide vanes and a boost pressure regulator (Y77/6)
- Engine 651.955/957 is fitted with a 2-stage turbocharger, the Waste Gate pressure transducer (Y77/7), the boost pressure control flap pressure transducer (Y93/1) and the additional boost pressure sensor (B5/9)
Engine 651.9 is fitted with a regulated engine oil pump to reduce fuel consumption. The valve regulated oil pressure pump (Y133) actuated by the CDI control unit only delivers the required quantity of engine oil through the engine oil pump.
