Model 222 as of model year 2018 with code 640 (SAE dynamic LED headlamps, right-hand traffic)
Model 222 as of model year 2018 with code 641 (Dynamic LED headlamps, left-hand traffic)
Model 222 as of model year 2018 with code 642 (Dynamic LED headlamps, right-hand traffic)
Location
The front lamp unit LED matrix control units are located on the bottom of the respective front lamp unit.
The front LED matrix lamp unit control units are tightly screwed to the housing of the respective front lamp unit. The front LED matrix lamp unit control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.
Tasks
The front lamp units are equipped with "multibeam technology". Here, the light sources for implementing the high beams function are each equipped with 84 LEDs that can be actuated individually. Using a selected actuation of the LEDs, the formation and intensity of the light cone can be influenced and a variety of complex light functions implemented.
The left front LED matrix lamp unit control unit controls the light distribution of the left front adaptive high beam (E1e24). The right front LED matrix lamp unit control unit controls the light distribution of the right front adaptive high beam (E2e24).
The front LED matrix lamp unit control units are tasked with the following:
- Read in sensors and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling functions
- Actuation of components
- Transmitting signals
Read in sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Periphery CAN (CAN PER)
Direct line
The left front LED matrix lamp unit control unit directly reads in the signals of the temperature sensors in the left front lamp unit.
The right front LED matrix lamp unit control unit directly reads in the signals of the temperature sensors in the right front lamp unit.
Peripherals CAN
The front lamp unit LED matrix control units read in various status information and requests via the periphery CAN. This includes the following:
- Terminal status of terminal 15
- "Switch on low beams" request
- "Switch on high beams" request
- Object information, Adaptive Highbeam Assist
- Status of intelligent headlamp control (Intelligent Light System)
- "Light distribution" request, intelligent headlamp control (Intelligent Light System)
- Request "Switch on fan motor"
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Controlling functions
The front LED matrix lamp unit control units control the following functions:
- Low beam
- High beam
- Thermal management (temperature monitoring and fan control)
The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. The front lamp unit LED matrix control units evaluate the signals of the temperature sensors. If the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the front lamp unit LED matrix control units reduce the actuation currents of the LEDs and thereby lower the heat development. The front lamp units are also ventilated. The active ventilation is also used at the same time for thawing or deicing at low outside temperatures.
Actuation of components
The left front LED matrix lamp unit control unit actuates the following components via direct lines:
- Left low beam (E1e2)
- Left front adaptive high beam
- Fan motor 2 for left front lamp unit (E1m5)
- Left additional high beam (E1e32)
The right front LED matrix lamp unit control unit actuates the following components via direct lines:
- Right low beam (E2e2)
- Right front adaptive high beam
- Fan motor 2 for right front lamp unit (E2m5)
- Right additional high beam (E2e32)
Transmitting signals
The front LED matrix lamp unit control units send status information on the low beams and high beams via the periphery CAN to the left headlamp control unit (E1n9) as the front exterior lights master control unit.
