Drive Assist systems, general
The Drive Assist systems support the driver in various situations in accordance with their configuration either actively or passively. In both cases, the Drive Assist systems contribute to driving safety. This helps to reduce the frequency of accidents and their consequences. Ride comfort is also enhanced.

ATTENTION ASSIST
By evaluating steering patterns, any onset of driver fatigue (e.g. on long monotonous journeys on freeways and highways) can be detected. If the evaluation indicates fatigue or an increasing lack of attention by the driver, the driver is prompted to take a break by means of visual and acoustic warnings.
Cruise control
The CRUISE CONTROL constantly adjusts the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver.
The driving assistance systems named below are based on camera or radar technology. People and objects such as, e.g. vehicles and obstacles or traffic signs are registered on the basis of camera or radar technology. Depending on the particular requirements, the driving assistance systems use the detection ranges of the radar sensors and multifunction camera as shown in the diagram below.
Shown on Model 222
Active Brake Assist (with code 258 (Active Brake Assist))
The Active Brake Assist continuously checks the distance to the vehicle in front, warns the driver visually and acoustically of potential collisions (e.g. rear-end collision) with other vehicles, thereby helping to reduce the risk of accident considerably. In an imminent collision situation, the Active Brake Assist initiates autonomous partial braking.
The Active Brake Assist evaluates detection range "A".
Distance Pilot DISTRONIC (with code 23P (Driving Assistance Package))
The DISTRONIC distance pilot automatically regulates the speed and distance to a vehicle in front according to the requirements of the driver by braking (if necessary) and accelerating again (if possible).
The handling characteristics of the DISTRONIC distance pilot automatically adapts to the selected transmission modes (DYNAMIC SELECT).
The DISTRONIC distance pilot evaluates detection ranges "A", "B" and "C".
Steering pilot (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
The Steering Pilot supports the driver in keeping the vehicle in its lane. In addition, the Steering Pilot can carry out automatic lane changes on multilane highways.
At speeds of 0 to 60 km/h, e.g. slow-moving traffic, the Steering Pilot evaluates the lane data and information on vehicles driving ahead and at the side. Between 30 and 130 km/h, the Steering Pilot analyzes either lane data or, if no lane markings exist, information about the vehicles driving ahead and next to the vehicle in question. In a range between 130 to 210 km/h the Steering Pilot only evaluates lane data.
The Steering Pilot relieves the driver on both monotonous and overcrowded stretches of road. This allows the driver to concentrate more on traffic. The Steering Pilot does not, however, relieve the driver of his/her task of operating the vehicle in a safe manner. Moreover, assistance is only active within defined limits, meaning, for example, that no support is provided for large steering movements at low speeds, such as on mountain roads.
The steer pilot requires that the driver always has his hands on the steering wheel, so that he could intervene route and track-aligning at any time. If the steer pilot recognizes that the driver does not have his hands on the steering wheel for a longer period of time, there is an optical and acoustic takeover request and delays the vehicle if necessary to a standstill.
Evasive Steering Assist (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
The evasive steering assist function supports the driver in the case of imminent collisions with pedestrians. If the evasive steering assist detects an evasion maneuver request from the driver in this situation, the system supports the evasive maneuver by means of additional toothed rack force, helps to keep the vehicle stable and makes it easier to set the vehicle on a straight course following the evasive maneuver. This support is always initiated by the driver; the driver determines the direction of the evasive maneuver. The driver can therefore either go with the system activity or override the system.
The philosophy of the Evasion-Steer-Assist is to noticeably support the driver; the initiative to evade collision must however come from him. For an automatic evasive movement a previously unaware driver might be so shocked by the spontaneous movement of the steering wheel that he could react wrongly and could intuitively try to steer against it. The evasive steering assist evaluates detection ranges "A" and "B".
Blind Spot Assist (with code 234 (Blind Spot Assist))
The Blind Spot Assist monitors the rear and side areas of the vehicle and notifies the driver in case the intended lane change (turn signal indicator set) is not recommended at a given point in time. In a broader sense, Blind Spot Assist serves as an extension of the inside rearview mirror. It does not release the driver of his/her obligation to perform lane changes safely on his/her own responsibility.
The Blind Spot Assist evaluates detection range "C".
Active Blind Spot Assist (with CODE 23P (Driving assistance package))
Active Blind Spot Assist monitors the rear and side areas of the vehicle and notifies the driver in case the intended lane change (turn signal indicator set) is not recommended at the given point in time. In a broader sense, Active Blind Spot Assist acts as an extension of the outside mirrors and inside rearview mirror. It does not release the driver of his/her obligation to perform lane changes safely on his/her own responsibility.
Active Blind Spot Assist can additionally perform brake system interventions to correct the course, taking the surroundings of the vehicle into account. The active interventions by the brake system are performed on specific wheels and have a course-correcting effect on the vehicle. If a risk of collision is detected with vehicles that are in the blind spot, then an accident can be avoided or the consequences of the accident lessened.
The Active Blind Spot Assist evaluates detection ranges "A", "B" and "C".
Active Lane Keeping Assist (with code 23P (Driving Assistance Package) except code 243 (Active Lane Keeping Assist))
The Active Lane Keeping Assist detects when the vehicle crosses lane markings, and issues a haptic warning to the driver in certain situations by initiating vibrations on the steering wheel. If the driver fails to react to the warning, targeted brake interventions are triggered to move the vehicle back into to the lane. If the driver indicates that he/she is "active" before or during the intervention by the brake system, the intervention by the brake system is suppressed or canceled.
The Active Lane Keeping Assist evaluates detection ranges "A", "B" and "C".
Active Lane Keeping Assist (with code 243 (Active Lane Keeping Assist) except code 23P (Driving Assistance Package))
Active Lane Keeping Assist detects when the vehicle crosses lane markings, and issues a haptic warning to the driver through vibrations on the steering wheel. If the vehicle unintentionally crosses a solid lane marking and the driver does not respond to the warning, the Active Lane Keeping Assist will correct the vehicle's course through targeted brake interventions on one side. If the driver indicates that he/she is "active" before or during the intervention by the brake system, the intervention by the brake system is suppressed or canceled.
Active Lane Keeping Assist evaluates detection range "B".
Active Brake Assist with intersection function (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
The Active Brake Assist with intersection function assesses the traffic situation in front of the vehicle and continuously determines the hazard potential for a rear-end collision. In critical accident situations, the Active Brake Assist with intersection function introduces appropriate measures geared towards avoiding a collision or, at the least, reducing the possible consequences of a collision. Furthermore, there is a distance warning function contained therein which advises the driver about a vehicle driving immediately ahead which is too close. An optical and acoustic warning is issued before any possible collisions with vehicles or stationary obstacles on the vehicle's own lane.
The Active Brake Assist with intersection function can also provide support in case of imminent collisions with cross-traffic at intersections. The pedestrian detection can prevent a collision with pedestrians or reduce the severity of the impact. If the driver operates the brake too tentatively in a hazardous situation, Active Brake Assist with intersection function automatically increases the brake pressure for effective emergency braking, up to maximum full-stop braking, if necessary. Thanks to the brake application that is adapted to the situation, the traffic following behind is also provided with as much braking distance as possible.
Active Lane Keeping Assist with intersection function evaluates detection ranges "A" and "B".
Active Lane Keeping Assist with intersection function is a component of the PRE-SAFE® safety concept.
Rear-end PRE-SAFE® (with code 23P (Driving Assistance Package))
The rear end PRE-SAFE® function extends the preventative occupant protection in dangerous situations associated with following traffic. To this end, the traffic situation at the rear is monitored. Various measures are introduced on this basis that may be able to reduce the consequences of an accident for the vehicle occupants.
The rear-end PRE-SAFE® evaluates detection range "C".
PRE-SAFE® rear end is an integral part of the PRE-SAFE® safety concept.
Traffic Sign Assist (with CODE 513 (Traffic Sign Assist))
Traffic Sign Assist detects the traffic signs on the route being traveled by the vehicle. It notifies the driver of sign posted speed limits and prohibitions or their termination, while also warning visually and acoustically when entering a freeway or a expressway opposite the specified direction of travel (wrong-way driver scenario).
The following traffic signs are registered and evaluated:
- Speed limits including additional signs
- No overtaking signs and their termination
- No entry signs
The Traffic Sign Assist evaluates detection range "B".
Night View Assist (with code 610 (Night View Assist))
The Night View Assist provides pictures of the area in front of the vehicle in daylight and also when it is dark. Night View Assist makes it possible to detect any possible obstacles in the field of view of the driver before they are recognizable in the conventional headlamp light cone. People or animals present in the area in front of the vehicle are detected when it is dark and displayed with highlighted photo edges. In addition, depending on the vehicle equipment, the right or left headlamp light cone can be focused automatically on the relevant object ("spotlight"), so that the driver has the possibility of adjusting to the corresponding situation.
The Night View Assist evaluates detection ranges "B" (front camera field of view) and "F" (front night vision).
