Location 

The front SAM control unit is at the A-pillar in the driver footwell.

Reading in of signals 

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

• Direct line 
• Instrument panel LIN (LIN 1) 
• Roof LIN (LIN B13) 
• Battery sensor LIN (LIN B15) 
• Rain/light sensor LIN (LIN B16) 
• Interior CAN (CAN B) 

Direct line 

The signals from the following components are read via direct lines:

• Outside temperature sensor (B14)
• Exterior lights switch (S1)
• Right front brake wear sensor (S10/2)
• Brake fluid level switch (S11)
• Coolant level switch (S41)
• Windshield washer system washer fluid level switch (S42)
• Glove compartment anti-theft alarm system switch (S62/7) (on model 217.4)
• Right engine hood contact switch (S62/42)
• Left engine hood contact switch (S62/43)
• Separate trunk locking switch (S88/6) (with code 887 (Separate trunk locking), model 217)

Instrument panel LIN 

The signals from the following components are read-in over the instrument panel LIN:

• Driver side instrument panel button group (S6/1) (with code 235 (Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC), code 238 (Active Lane Keeping Assist), code 266 (Steer Assist), code 463 (Head-up Display), code 501 (360° Camera) or code 610 (Night View Assist))
• Center instrument panel button group (S6/2)

Roof LIN 

The signals of the following components are read-in over the roof LIN:

• Overhead control panel control unit (N70)
• Forward mirror dimming light sensor (A67h1) (with code 249 (Automatically dimming mirror), model 217)
• Rearward mirror dimming light sensor (A67h2) (with code 249 (Automatically dimming mirror), model 217)
• Inside rear-view mirror dimming (A67h3) (with code 249 (Automatically dimming mirror), model 217)
• Garage door opener (A67n2) (with code 231 (Garage door opener) or code 232 (Garage door opener))

Battery sensor LIN 

The battery sensor (B95) signals are read in over the battery sensor-LIN.

Rain and light sensor LIN 

The signals from the following components are read in over the rain/light sensor LIN:

• Rain/light sensor with additional functions (B38/2)
• Wiper motor (M6/1)

Interior CAN 

The signals are read in by the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN. The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Evaluation of input factors 

The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.

Controlling functions 

The front SAM control unit also controls the following functions:

• Energy management
• Exterior lights
• Interior illumination
• Windshield wiper system

The actuation of the components takes place via the following connections:

Instrument panel LIN 

The analog clock (A70/1) is actuated over the instrument panel LIN.

Roof LIN (vehicles up to Model year 2018) 

The following components are actuated over the roof LIN:

• Inside rear-view mirror (A67) (with CODE 231 (Garage door opener) or CODE 232 (Garage door opener) or CODE 249 (Automatically dimming mirror), model 217)
• Overhead control panel control unit

as of model year 2018

In vehicles as of model year 2018, the roof LIN is no longer connected to the front SAM control unit, but instead to the interior CAN via the overhead control panel control unit.

Interior CAN 

The signals are sent by the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN. The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
