Sectional view of front axle transmission
Front axle transmission 4MATIC, general
The front axle transmission is designed as a single-speed differential with fuel-efficient technology (fuel economy). The front axle differential housing is made of aluminum and it is bolted by way of the front axle differential carrier (7) to the oil pan. The drive pinion (2) is at an angle of 83° to the ring gear (3) so as to adjust the angular course of the propeller shaft relative to the front axle transmission. The ring gear (3) is attached on the engine side and bolted to the differential cage of the differential (4). This location of components of the front axle transmission causes the change in direction of rotation, which occurs due to the single-speed output in the transfer case, to reverse again.
