General
The head unit operating unit on the center console provides control options for the multimedia system and driving systems. The head unit operating unit can be used as an alternative to the touchpad on vehicles with touchpad. In the multimedia system, the user selects whether the head unit operating unit or the touchpad should be used as the central control element for the multimedia system.

The head unit operating unit is located on the center console.
Recording of control signals
The head unit operating unit contains the audio/COMAND controller as a central control element. This allows the multimedia system to be operated by tilting, pressing and turning. A back key and a button for the main menu and personal favorites support menu navigation.
Interface between multimedia system control and switch panels of multimedia system
The head unit operating unit is connected to the vehicle's network architecture and connected to the switch panels of the multimedia system. This enables data exchange between the following components:
- Multimedia system control
- Left lower control panel
- Right lower control panel
- Upper control panel
